I have one of the small diameter air cleaners like used on the 64 and 65 models that came with a single 4 barrel carb. This is from a 64 Chry 300. I plan on using it on my 64 Fury. I have a buddy that wants it BAD! I have been telling him for 2 years that I dont want to sell it, but he keeps trying. Last offer was $100, and he said for me to just name my price when I refused the offer. I keep telling him to find one on ebay, etc., but he seems to be fixated on obtaining mine! Are these things that hard to find?? I am thinking about throwing out a $200 price, because I really dont want to sell it. I dont want to take advantage of a buddy, but he will just not let up on wanting to buy it.
What are you guys opinions on the actual value of this air cleaner, and how hard is it going to be to find another one?
Thanks

He must'nt be a good friend if you're wanting to rape him on the price! They are only worth $75-$100.00 dollars!!!!!

You did not read my post, moparsteve. I have been telling him for 2 years it's not for sale! He just will NOT let up about it, or go find his own on ebay. I am not trying to rape him, just shut him up. Thats why I was asking opinions on the value of this part. I dont want to sell the part.

Does it have a port for breather?

NO, this is not the one with the small breather tube. I think those came along in about '66. This is the one that looks like a slant 6 air cleaner, but has a bottom base plate that fits an AFB.

Sounds like a 273 Commando/Charger air cleaner. They're worth a small fortune if they're chrome and in great shape. $150-$200 Non chrome, same style ones came on '66 Charger 383, etc and are cheaper. Does it look like this one....

Just like that except without the breather tube to the oil cap.

OK. I believe the tube was for Cali. emmisions and the C.A.P. package. The Federal housing didn't have the nipple. Like I said, the painted ones are a bit cheaper than the chrome ones, I think. In excellent shape, I would think $100 is reasonable.

My buddy came over today waving a $100 bill at me. I told him 3 times I did not want to sell. He kept saying that everything has a price, just name yours. I finally quoted $500, and he shut up and left me alone. LOL I asked him why he didn't just try to find one on ebay, and he said he had not been able to find one. I have had a couple cars with them back years ago, but I guess times have changed since the seventies...

Within the last 6 months I bought nice one at a local boneyard (62 Valiant) for $15, decided not to use it & sold it for $65 on ebay. I also bought a really nice one at Carlisle a couple years back for $40. $100 sounds like top dollar.

It is a rare piece in my opinion. I don't see them very often. I seen them at the Nats for 150 to 200.00

the slant 6 top cover is not the same as the 383 top part....they take different filters inside....Nicks Garage says that "they appear to be the same"...but they are not...

The black one without nipple is around a $200 item....double that for the chrome version

I have a nice one without nipple and I would not sell it for $200. They were used on 62-64 361-383-413 cars without CAP.

I have a 65 Dart wagon that I had shipped to me from California. It had the same air cleaner but with a 1 barrel base. The lid was the same as a chromed Commando lid except being painted black. Take a look at this guy's air cleaner identification site: http://www.nicksgarage.com/aircleaner.htm

Dartman, thanks for the link. Very helpful. & my 64 Sport Fury has the orig 383 4bbl black air (lynch road car) air cleaner. If I decide to to build a 505"stroker RB (426 Commando look alike), I'll be looking for the correct larger chrome air cleaner. 64 sport fury 383 small file.jpg

Late to the post but would anyone know what the small chrome ones go for.

Thanks

I've personally sold the chrome Commando air cleaners from $100 to $150 depending on the chrome condition. I've got one that a PO drilled a series of holes all around the circumference of the lid (I guess for extra air!). I doubt I could sell it for $25. I've got another one with the hose nipple for CAP or CA emissions that if I decide to sell will be as a package deal with a set of restored Commando valve covers.
