Id tag reads G 440 hp2...... date on block is 20. 70 But casting number is 3698830 440.7 this casting number typically refers to 73 and up blocks and some sites are now including 72 blocks.( with more info coming in),,,,is this mayby proof that this casting number was used as far back as 1970? I was told that this engine was out of a 1971 rt 440 six pack challenger.... it does have all the correct manifolds , the correct carbs... and the weighted dampener.... the vin by oil pan is not there... and some research suggests that some blocks just were never stamped... don't know what to make of all this!

The G440 would tell you it is for a 71 model. If you post some pics of the stampings, maybe someone here can let you know if they look a little suspect. You are correct though, I would think the engine casting number would be 2536430 for that year. I am sure someone here can explain the mystery better than me though.

the date on the side clearly sais it was cast in 1970 and the id pad on top sais g 440.... so I know it came in a 1971 vehichle..... the casting number is the only contradiction

There's no contradiction between the casting date and the number. The contradiction comes from, apparently, incorrect sources.

That does happen. I presently have a 440 engine stamped aug 71 for a 72, and the casting date was Jan 1970. Chrysler had a bunch of 440 engines, and reduced demand. it took until the middle of 72' to use a bunch up. Which explains the presence of many forged crank engines in the 72' model. I also have a 74' 440 HP forged crank engine, removed from a Charger, and it is also drilled for a stick. I believe the engine at night is creeping ever closer to my Cordoba, now that is a very tempting thought.

Block Casting numbers

I P5040581.jpgP5040586.jpgm researching the same casting number this morning in my 1972 GTX. My casting number is also 3698830440 then followed by an I or and L. Mine also has what appears to be 72 stamped right above the main casting.

The 3698830440 motor has what appears to be the original 4 barrel intake casting # 3614014 so it's starting to look like my 1972 GTX might have the original motor. It looks like it's never been taken apart and possibly never removed form the car. Please let me know it there are any other numbers that I can look for the verify.

could the blue paint that's left on the intake be the original paint?

Mopar didn't always follow the rules.... wonder how many original motors were lost to misidentification. They probably made so many that year they didn't run out till '78

My 71 R/T charger original block is also a 3698830-440-9 casting, dated 6 16 70. The machined pad is stamped G-440 HP
7 20

I confirmed that the correct VIN number is stamped on the block. So the VIN plate on the dash = VIN number stamped on the cowling= VIN number on the radiator support = VIN number on the broadcast sheet= VIN number thats stamped on the block. Engine has 91K and ran really strong until it was removed about two weeks ago. Car still has the original interior thats in very good shape with a complete factory air system.
