Does the tq converter spin in N? I think that's a "yes", but don't know for certain. Does the driveshaft? What about while rolling at, say, 45mph? If you go from D to N does the driveshaft keep spinning, freewheel, or just stop? How 'bout if I just throw it in P while I'm driving down the highway...is that bad?

All but the last one are real questions.
Thank you.

The TQ is multiple pieces; the part bolted to the flexplate will turn at engine speed. But the output shaft that delivers the torque won't move if the car is held at a stop with brakes. The driveshaft is directly connected to the rear wheels and will always move if the wheels are moving, regardless of what gear the transmission is in, or in neutral.

But why the questions? Are you trying to trouble shoot something?

The entire TQ is spinning at engine RPM. In neutral, the input is also rotating. The pump is still pressurizing the system. No clutches/bands are engaged. The output is stationary.

The convertor itself and half of the internals always spin when the motor is running. The other half of the convertor spins as centrifugal force is applied as the motor rev's up.

To eliminate the convertor you need to know if you have a steel or cast crank. Once you know the answer to that question you now need to remove the convertor cover (4 bolts) and turn the motor and see if you have a weight or not on the convertor. this is the easy part. Steel crank no weight, Cast crank has a weight. If you have the opposite combo you WILL have a vibration no questions asked. If you have a weight and a steel crank take a chisel and remove the weight. If you have a cast crank and no weight go to a junkyard and remove a weight pay attention to where it is located from the drain plug and the ring gear and spot weld or JB weld and you are good to go.

Hope this helps at least a little....
