Can anyone give me a way to tell the difference between a converter for a cast and forged crank?? I have a 392 with a forged crank on alluminum torqueflite. I need to use the correct converter of course..I need to know how I can make sure i getnthe right one. Advice needed here

As I understand it, all big blocks and small block converters can be interchanged as long as they have the correct weight for externally balanced engines. Internally balanced engines have no weights on the converter at all. As for hemis I am not sure. But usually an engine with a forged crank is internally balanced. Is the harmonic balancer thin or does it have an offset lobe to balance?

All 426 HEMI engines were internally balanced with steel cranks. They used converters without balance weights.
All steel crank 440 4 barrel engines used converters without balance weights. The 6 pack/6 barrel engines were externally balanced because the rods were sooooo heavy! The cast crank 440 had the weights on the converter, as did every 400 and 360 engine.

If i remember correctly all 392s were internal balanced engines so you would need a converter with no attached balance weights.
