So I am putting a new stereo in my 73 roadrunner and was installing my 6x9's in the rear when I noticed the mounting locations were not the same size one is 6x9 and the other looks like a 4x6. Why the hell are they different lol it really threw me off. Had to mount the 6x9 from the bottom hopefully it works out lol.

I do beleive that one is for a speaker and the other is for a defogger unit... at least it was on my 74 charger.

I relocated my defogger unit and used the smaller hole for the second speaker anyways... I mounted both speakers from inside the trunk anyway and the covers hid the hole size difference anyway (I did not cut the hole bigger to match the otherside, you will likely not hear the difference anyway, I didnt)

I have the same issue in my 74 Roadrunner. Sounds like you guys have a great solution. :)

Strange the hole was definitely shaped like a speaker and I have a hole in the middle of my back dash the looks it was for the defogger but who knows I just mounted under the smaller one.

here is a pic... have not put my new speakers in yet

NOTE: yes that is a plywood package tray lol ...and filthy windows

What's even stranger, is that the defogger was originally (IIRC) designed to fit in a 6x9 speaker hole. Somewhere it got changed to 4x6, but the speakers stayed 6x9.. ??!?!?!?

Aka the oval hole would be for the intake for the defogger. The blower mtr would be under there and then the duct would go over to the center and exhaust to the window in the long skinny hole

I had to mount the rear speakers from underneath in my 73 Sat to, This explains a couple things!

Wow what the hell am I gonna do in the winter now for my back window it gets kinda cold up here in the adirondacks lol. Just kidding the rear wheel drive would suck and the salt too.
