My take, I assume we are talking EFI here. That being said, most systems being return style, the pump is pumping at max flow fu;; time, and what, flow is 110%? of what max HP demands, assuming a single speed pump that is a lot of fuel, that is relatively cool, if engine is running, it is pump[ng fuel thru the pump, and that should be all the cooling it needs. If the pumps needed a 1/4 tank of fuel to keep cool, the OEM would have directed the return fuel directly onto the pump. or something similar or made the PU so it could never draw more than a 1/4 tank, and relabel the fuel gauge.
I personally rate this as an old wife's tale, right up with never charge a battery sitting on concrete.

Me personally, I ALWAYS run to the bottom, I can't stand carrying around a 1/4 of a tank of useless weight/gas.
I have had among others, three Tacoma's, ran all to the bottom of the tank. My last one, I had to replace the in tank fuel pump once.
It has 560,000 miles on it.

A fuel pump that's already failing (electronic, in tank) CAN have heat issues if the fluid level is too low. Maybe. But more likely, the heat issues are from some sort of internal failure.

But.

LOOK at an EFI pump setup. They're TALL - more like half a tank to keep it submerged.

That said, low inlet fuel pressure to the VP44 high-pressure injector pump is a known achilles' heel on my generation Cummins. They can run on less than 10psi inlet pressure...but anything under 12 (consistently) can cause internal failure due to heat. The fuel ITSELF keeps the pump cool and lubricated, as it flows through the pump (mounted on the engine, not in the tank). The return line allows "unused" pressure to still flow through the VP44, and it is simply returned to the tank. But that FLOW, is what keeps the pump cool.

Run it till the light comes on.

Pretty much only if the pump already has an internal issue, will it be - potentially - a problem. They're designed to run dry. And, they're different than a VP44, which takes 15psi inlet and turns it into 4,500psi - yes, forty-five hundred psi - output pressures - the tolerances and the pressurizing method are completely different. But even so, a VP44 isn't submerged - it relies on the fuel flow THROUGH it, to keep it cool.

Some don't know how to pump gas, some are afraid they'll get dirty. Some may not have the money handy , some think they are above pumping their own gas, some have young children that they don't like leaving alone in the car while they pump gas, some don't like standing in the cold to pump gas, some may even think it's the least you can do in exchange for all the other things they do for you. My wife did it all at home, never had to ask, it was done. I made sure her car was clean, full of gas and all maintenance was done. 46 years and all is still well. Small price to pay.

I use to run tank low. Put 10 gal in my 68 dart. Came out the next day and tank read 1/8th. Pin hole from float hook. 1/4 tank get gas.

My car doesn’t get out much. I don’t think I ever put more than a half tank of gas in it. I don’t think it makes sense to have a lot of gas just sitting there getting old. I would rather put fresh gas in it more often. That being said, sometimes I decide to go to the local cruise in at the last minute and just to make sure, I’ll rock the car at the rear from side to side. I hear gas splashing around in there, we’re good.
