mine just happened yesterday I was gonna buy this sweet '65 Dart Wagon from this one jackass, he told me $900 2 days before then I got ahold of him yesterday asking if i could go see the car and he asks me how much money I have and naturally I don't just plain out tell him but I say I've got enough to not waste his time. and he says "Well I hope its more than $1000 or else it goes today" and I say "woah woah wait I thought you said $900??" and he says "yeah well my buddy says he'll take it off my hands, he's gonna put a new "challenger" engine in it" so I say "alright then forget it"

obviously he doesnt know a thing about mopars because well....a Challenger engine???
come on dude.

s-it happens, I had it happen to me two times a few years ago or so. The one time I was in transit to buy the car.

I actually have been lucky enough not to have that happen.

What does happen ALL to often is the ******** who have a sick piece rotting in their yard and you ask and knock for weeks and some times years just to hear "It's not for sale" then they end up selling anyway after you left your name & number 100x or better, I HATE FNG ******** like that, you know the people too. They won't even put a freakin' car cover on it. Makes me sick. ID love to smash their face wioth something made of Iron! LOL!

I had one I was trying to buy but didnt have all the cash, Someone else wanted it and the owner called to let me know and see how much longer I needed (he was trying to help me out but couldnt let it go for what I had) I told him if the guy has the cash take it.

A month later the car was for sale for twice the price, Of coarse he had a hard time selling it for what he wanted. He finally sold it and it ended up on ebay repainted for 4 times the original price. I saw it listed there at least 4 times. I hate flippers.

I had that happen to my on a 1998 Supra TT I was going to buy... oh well

I had forgotten about this, but the first Porsche I tried to buy was sold out from under me. I had given the lady a deposit check on Saturday telling her I'd be at the bank when it opened on Monday. Then Sunday she calls and asked what I wanted her to do with my check because she had sold the car to someone else. I was pissed. He didn't have the cash in had either and like me was going to the bank on Monday.

Apparently giving someone a deposit check in Texas does NOT constitute a "contract" of any kind.

Anyway, I wound up buying another Porsche that wasn't as nice cosmetically, which worked in my favor. Cause I made some modifications and started racing it. We (me and the car) developed a reputation that preceded us when going to events put on by other regions. Those in my class really hated to see that car driving up.

So it all worked out. I've got stacks of trophies won with that car, and it was someof the most fun I've ever had in my life. I even got to run Riverside International before it was shut down.

how cool is that!

Was looking at a 67 Coronet that a friend told me about. Car was apart, didn't run and needed some floor work. Agreed on a price, and told him I'd be back on Saturday with a trailer. Called night before, they were having trouble finding the title for it, but they should have it by morning.

Saturday morning I borrowed a truck from my brother, and borrowed a trailer from a friend. Just as I was about to leave, I called them to verify they'd be at the car with the title. Nope, they can't find the title, but to head on down and they'll surely find it by then. Told him call me when he finds the title. 4 hours later I return truck and trailer, and get home to a message on my machine. "We found the title, but we want $200 more for it (it was only a $700 car). " Yea, good luck with that..

Couple weeks later they called me back and said if I still wanted the car, it was available for the price we agreed on. I introduced them to my business partner, Mr Click and hung up..

just say thanks but no thanks

then when he calls you back cause he ain't got no buyers tell him you only have 500 $

I've had this happen a few times. I went with cash to pick up a 1970 Chevelle convertible that I had told the seller I was coming to get..he sold it out from under 15 minutes before I got there. Same thing happened with a 1987 Monte Carlo SS in Maryland, and another 69 Charger I went to look at before I bought the one I have now. I hate when this happens. I always take a trailer with me now just in case.

Mine was a near miss. I won an eBay auction for my Super Bee. The owner called me because the original owner was sitting in her kitchen, after I won, with cash on her kitchen table.

The owner made good on the auction and even trailered the car from Mississippi to Tennessee for me.

In the early '80s the local Chrysler-Plymouth dealership's owner had an AAR 'cuda stored way in the back. It just sat and collected dust. Every time I went in there, I'd ask him to sell it to me. I'd go check it out each time and each time tell him how much I wanted it. At the time, it was probably about a $4,500 to $6,000 car. After they moved to a new location, I asked where the AAR was. All I got was "Oh that, he sold it. Some guy came in and said he'd buy it. Not even a regular customer." WTF? While I had never bought a car there, I'd spent a ton on parts and he sells it to some guy off the street. Douchebag.

About 1988, I test drove a GLH Omni that was on an Olds dealer's lot. I liked it way better than the V-6 crapwagon Camaro I had at the time. I drove home, mentioned it to my wife and she told me to get it if I wanted it. So I called them and asked if they still had it and they assured me it was still there. So I drive 40 minutes back there and tell them I'll take it and they tell me they sold it to someone else. As a matter of fact, it was already sold when they told me they still had it. Idiots. Did they think when I showed up and they'd sold the GLH I'd think "what the hell, I'm here, maybe I'll buy a 98." I was happy to see them go out of business.

Yeah. Management at dealerships are stuck in the "old way" of doing business. They also believe the "sales experts" that couldn't actually sell cars, so now they sell tapes telling others how to do it.

They will tell you that X% of people will buy something other than what they originally came in for. Having been in the business, I can tell you the customer has changed, and is less likely to do that. They (the customers) are generally irritated by the "tried and true" sales tactics.

I hated it, and I fought management all the way. The best part of that was, despite I wouldn't do what they said I should, I was still month after month one of the three top salesmen they had. And those other two guys had been in the business at least 7 YEARS longer than me.

Understand they (the salespeople) will generally get their asses chewed if they don't go talk to you on the lot. Don't be rude to them. They have a job to do just like you do. But if THEY are rude, then split. And remember, they're not all out to get you. I took real offense when someone would lie to me.....treat me like I'm the enemy....and all I've done is say "hello".

But I'm not in the biz any more. I got out before it all crashed. But if I decide to buy a new Challenger, I'll probably go back......at least long enough to get the car.

pre-lude to a car being sold out from under you

One day 2 0r 3 years ago a friend says "I saw a blue charger in front of someones house" In my expierance every 68-70 b-body I have "heard" about is a Charger. I get the address and go see for myself...Low and behold, my dream ride...A Jamacia Blue 69 road runner. COMPLETE! 383 4spd. I poked around it. It is beyond obvious this car has NEVER been molested......Long story short, I banged on the door many times over the past few years...getting his wife telling me "not for sale"..I refuse to take no for an answer. I finally corner the guy one Saturday afternoon..(is that stalking?).. surprise, surprise.." I"M GONNA FIX IT UP ONE DAY"...I wasnt havent it. I keep him talking, finding out he's the original owner! 42K miles! GET THIS.. the ignorant Jerk is from the SAME NEIGHBORHOOD in Manhattan as my father, who had a white 69 road runner. This guy ACTUALLY REMEMBERED my dads car.... (he had a hemi with 383 emblems on the hood)...Still I keep him talking...I make reference to it being a "B-Body"... he says " YEAH... I LIKE THE BLUE WITH BLACK STRIPES". He thought b-body refered to the color... So I threw some numbers around and left him my phone #....It still sits there. BET YOU ANYTHING in a year or 2 i see it in a loxcal body shop and the guy paid $1500 for it cause the guys wife wanted new Kitchen cabinets.

Years back a FC7 70 GTX for 2k was in the paper. Called got the address ran over there. Talked to the owner ths kid got in trouble trying to outrun the cops and damaged the front fender, everything else was perfect a real V code car too, auto buckets, nice car. Told him I wanted it and said his son will be home at 3 but since I was first car was mine. Get there at 2:30 ready to go and the guy comes out and said his son called and said sell it to the first one. Since I just left the next one that showed up he sold too:mad::mad:was I pissed
