CAR: 1973 Dodge Charger SE
MOTOR: Stock 318 with a 2 barrel carb. (original carb)
TRANSMISSION: 904 Torqueflite automatic. (stock from factory)
DIFFERENTIAL: I have no idea except that it's stock.
VIN: *WP29G3A200961*
FENDER TAG: 01140 197621 031 98106

What differential is on this car? (I'm trying to figure out how to upload pictures from droid.)

Most importantly... I want to install 2:73 gears. The issue is that I'm fairly new to mechanics, and know little about differentials. Where can I buy the gears, for what price, and how do I install them??? Any help is appreciated.https://scontent-sea1-1.xx.fbcdn.ne...=82439bf81a03e22f1d3d2a3911471a74&oe=55EAFDC3

It might already have those gears. Just put a floor jack under the differential and lift the rear wheels off the ground with trans in neutral. Rotate the wheels on one side and count the number of driveshaft rotations it takes to turn the wheels one full rotation. If the other rear wheel spins the opposite direction it's open, same direction is sure grip.

Like it was said. Probably already has 2.70 something in it. Are you having a problem? Not being a jerk here, but if you are new to working on cars and you cant identify what axle you have with one glance, perhaps setting up a ring and pinion is not something you should try. There are special tools involved and trying to do it in the car (if its not an 8 3/4) will make it that bigger of a pita.

As stated not an easy job for a beginner. So tell use does it have a cover with bolts on the back side of the rear this would be a 8 1/4 if there's no cover or bolts it is a 8 3/4 you could have ether rear in your car from the factory. The gears are probably as stated already a 2.7?'s look for a tag under the bolts or if there is no bolts go to the front side and look for a tag under the nuts. You can also tell us how many rpm's your car is at (at I believe 60 or 70) someone else will chime in and correct my mph I can't remember.good luck
Danas also have rear cover with bolts but shouldn't be on your car and beings the 318 is still there I'd say deff no Dana

drobertson, If it turns out you have a 8 3/4
I have 741 center chunk its a 2 something If I recall correctly its a 2:94.
This is a open gear set { non sure grip} I know it I good , its the original one from my car.
64 K on it when I pulled it, no noise, pinion bearing is good , yoke is still on it, gear teeth are fine , good pattern. been kept dry inside.
I will never use it, You pay the UPS shipping you can have it. PM me if you want it.

It's most likely a 8 1/4. My charger came with that and a stock 2.71. I swapped it for a 9 1/4 with a posi 3.55

Okay thanks. I understand it's a hard task... But it can't be that much harder than rebuilding a 318. I've done it on two different vehicles since I got into mechanics roughly a year ago.

putting engines together is easy....setting up a differential so it does not whine on acceleration or deceleration takes practice and special tools

I admire your guts. Get a book on setting up differentials and give it a try. If it howls, try again. Its only money, right?
The 2.73 ratio is a GM number. Mopars had 2.71 and 2.76 depending on the version of the axle.

You got two start somewhere , I had never been in a rear so I had an extra one laying around so I ripped it apart and rebuilt it . Shoved it in a car and it turned out perfect so it's possible . You never know what you can and can't do till you try . It's only nuts and bolts . Worse case buy another chunk if you destroy this one. You can probably get a take out from someone else on here doing an upgrade.
Like the freebie above . Good luck and do yourself a favor and take tons of pictures just in case you forget where something go's (I do this everytime I do something new) its very helpful most of the times (especially when rebuilding a n automatic transmission)

" I had never been in a rear"

Famous line to open with when meeting a woman for the first time...

You will never forget the smell of old differential gear oil is all I can add.
