I cannot hold the car at a stop light when facing downhill - the idle in neutral is 850-900 rpms.

I have manual drum brakes and want to upgrade to discs on all four tires, replace the single master cylinder with a dual cylinder, and add a brake booster.

I need help with which brake boosters will work and if the original brake booster was a single or dual diaphragm.

Were the original 1962 boosters single or dual diaphragm?

What other year B-Body dual diaphragm boosters can be easily adapted for a 1962 B-Body?

I do know the 62-65 b bodies uses a single diaphram if it had power brakes. The dual diaphram wasn't used until disk brakes came out.
The 62-65 uses the same power brake booster. 66 and up uses a different setup.

Wilwood, (and likely Baer) makes a master cylinder for use with brake systems that require higher pressure, such as four wheel discs with 12" rotors and 4 piston calipers etc. No need for a booster.... A much neater application. You will need a 1" bore if using four wheel disc's.

They are a little expensive but the cost is offset by not having to purchase a booster and master cyl set. Check with Jegs....

I want the booster so that my wife and daughter can drive it

it takes all my strength to hold the car at a standstill now and I'm not a small guy. I'm fairly certain a new master cylinder together with disc brakes will be fun to drive, but I want the booster so that my wife and daughter can drive it safely too.

I do not deny that disc brakes are a great upgrade, (especially 4 wheel disc's). But it would seem that you have some sort of problem with your brakes as they are now. I have been driving these cars since the 60's and have had very few equipped with disc brakes...or even power brakes, and have never had any unusual problems with the non power drums. Never hit anything...!!! My car now has non power drums and it drives and stops great.

I do agree with the safety of upgrading your brakes for the lesser experienced drivers of your car. With the right master cylinder and 4 wheel discs...... a booster is just not necessary for light pedal pressure.

I upgraded my 66 belvedere with power disk brakes and the car stops much better. Hope I never have to go back to manual drum brakes again.

the fluid is muddy so I'm guessing that's contributing

but I live at the top of a two-mile climb, so whenever I drive from my house it's two continous miles of braking before I get a chance to hit the gas.

I know I want a dual master cylinder and a booster so I'm ready to make those changes now instead of bothering to flush the lines.

I added a dual master cyl to my 63 Sport Fury but this is the stock power brake booster and it has stock power drum brakes. Ron

How does it stop compared with a modern car

How does it stop compared with a modern car of the same weight (best guess)?

I assume the single diaphragm contributes less power than a dual diaphram, but I don't know if that assumption is generally true or not.

It actually stops pretty good. Course if it had disc up front it would stop better but I have no problem stopping from 116 mph 1/4 mile blast. And the power brakes work fine even with the MP .557 cam. Ron
