I was wondering if there was any consensus about which paint line has colors that are the most true to original. In other words, if a person wants to get the best idea of what a color really looks like and doesn't have a good original part to look at which paint would it be best to go get a small amount of for a sprayout? I know the original colors probably had some variation to them due to a lot of factors such as when they were painted and so forth so that might be a loaded question, but I was just wondering if mopar restorers had a "go to" brand for authentic color matches.

In theory I would think it would be between Dupont Centari and PPG Delstar since those paints are the closest to what the Mopars of the 70's would have been painted with, acrylic enamel. Seems like so much time has past, however, I don't know if these paints are even the same as the were 40 years ago due to environmental regulations and so forth.

Thanks for any input on this.

I don't know if the formulations vary much from area to area because of environmental concerns, but here in Canada I've had good results with both Sherwin-Williams automotive paint, and BASF Inmont.

Do you mean the Deltron line of PPG paint (DCC, DBC, DBU, Delstar)?

My Y1 Delstar mix was dead on for color and composition, but was a bitch to work with.

My first Nason's mix was a bit light and too much metalic, but a color match of the Nasons, to the Delstar was spot on.

The Jy3 Nasons mix, however was spot on first time.

...and I'm a novice painter with about 20 hours of gun time.

Delstar has been around forever, and on many older cars it is about as close as one can normally get. Problem is if you are wanting to go with basecoat/clear, deltron doesn't work, unless you want to paint the acrylic enamel and let it dry then clear it. I have had them look up a delstar paint code before and cross reference it over to a dbc (Deltron 2000) basecoat for me too.

i got some dy3 yellow gold/cream from nason and it was dead on and matched perfect..i guess alot depends on who mixes the paint

did your nason paint take forever to dry?

No, but there was a strange side effect.

Anywhere that wasn't covered really well dried to a kind of crystalized texture, almost like it dried before it hit the metal.

Also at least once, an area that looked fine ended up with a run.
Outside bead of wheel rim, of all places.
