I knew I should have thought something would go wrong when everytime I see him painting he is never wearing a respirator. I talked to my paint guy last week about what I expected as far as the engine bay goes. I told him just make it look nice, clean up the crappy factory sealer and what not. So I checked in on Friday really quick and along the inner fenders where it is flat and the washer bottle and tag sit there are a couple dimples one on the passenger side and three on the drivers side. He proceeds to tell me that these were like this from the factory. First I've never see it on any mopars I've ever looked at and secondly I never told him to put in the factory flaws. Needless to say I'm calling him this morning and having him put the car back into a roller status so I can get it the hell out of there. I'm just hoping he isn't like screw you, you want the car out you put it in roller status. After all the things I've helped this guy out with I was hoping he'd take extra care with my car.:angryfire:

It's hard to get someone to listen. Too many know-it-alls. Good luck with this guy.

As with a lot of things anymore, there after the mighty buck, simple as that. It doesn't matter to a lot of them if its a classic car worth 25K or a civic worth 500 bucks, Just a suggestion but tell him to try to get it ready you've changed your mind for what ever reason so as to save yourself problems.. Good luck with this guy.

I've talked to him and I'm going to have him fix what he did so I don't have to pay this other dude. Once that's done I'm taking her out of there for good. He told me he'd be done fixing it by the end of this week so lets hope so.

I think that they all keep your car for so long before they finish it that they forget everything you had told them. Sometimes it's so long they probably don't even remember who owns the car until you come back to pay....

What year is the car? FWIW, my '65 has dimples on the inner fenders and firewall as well. Why would the guy go out of his way to put the 'factory flaws' back in? Got any photos?

It's a '69. I do have one pic but I don't know if you'd be able to see the dimples or not but the dimples I'm talking about aren't your spot weld type dimples these things look like someone took a punch and made them. He said he'd be fixing them today so we'll see how that goes. I have high hopes he'll get on it since he can't move the car in his shop because there is no dolly or front end on it and it's taking up about a bay and a half. I found a new paint/body guy who seems really stand up and has already mentioned somethings the current shop has done that probably shouldn't have been done. Such as leaving primered/sealed parts out in the rain/weather. He also found some think bondo on the fender around the antenna hole. I knew this was there I just didn't think it was too thick. Another thing that the old body guy did that pissed me off is he put my car under a lift and the car above it leaked tranny fluid on my primed roof! Thanks for the vent guys, my wife doesn't understand or care about my frustrations she just wants to drive the car.

That's messed up. Parking a car under another one leaking. I would have been rolling the car out right then. Body guys usually have you at their mercy once they get started. It a bummer finding one that will do a good job, and in a timely manner.

This new one I found seems pretty good. He's a younger guy (I say younger but he's probably older than me) and has been doing this since he was 16. He started this business about a year ago and really cares about the cars and the kind of product he puts out. His work I've seen is really good.

I think your lucky he's painting it! Just kidding but I'm in a worse dilemena! My 63 Polara is in the shop for 3 years and is still NOT painted! I paid all $$ up front (yup, I fell for the hook, line and sinker!) and even sweetned the deal 4 weeks ago with the Dupont Chroma base w/all the fixins!
I think for you and I it is "lesson learned".
Hope it all works out with you. "Good" shops are getting harder to find.

This is so true, usually shops take the money, and don't do the work -- finding the happy medium is what I strive to do when I take on metal working projects after media blasting, I usually tell them figure on 100 hrs if it involves major work, and that's just an estimate, usually get 30% up front, then bill end of month. It's worked so far...best of luck to you!

if i was you i would take a camera with me the next time i went to his shop and take some pics of the roof where the top car leaked on it, and when he ask just tell him if this is how he treats a customer's car then he can pay for the particular amount of repair.

I would but the next time I go to his shop, which should be Friday, I'll be showing up with a trailer. I can only chaulk it up to lessons learned, I'm only 28 so at least I've gotten a lot of the "bad" restoration experiences out of the way. I'm just trying to stay positive and remind myself how awesome the car will be when it's done.

Are you saying you have been waiting for a paint Job for 3 years?

Always found you can tell alot about ANY shop by doing a walk-through and checking for organization and cleanliness. General housekeeping is always a good indicator.

Man that's terrible. I would be seeing a lawyer. 3 yrs is unacceptable. Stuff like this is why I found one guy to do the body work that charges by the hour. Once he was done I found another to spray it. I didn't really come out cheap but I got a great paint job that only took 3 months.

Well, I'll try sweetness "one more time"
Many a restless night thinking about it.
Hopefully this thread will help others by providing insight and guidance.
