About six months ago, I came across a guy who had a good A-727 tranny that had been sitting in his garage since he swapped to a big block in his Satellite, and he offered it to me for $50. I was going to buy it just in case the tranny I have now ever failed, but since I've never had a 727 fail, I didn't think it was worth even $50 to have a back-up, so I passed on the deal.

Now I come across a guy who's going the other way, and swapping out a nice 72 440 that he put in his truck a couple of years ago for a small block, and he's looking to get rid of the 440 and B727, and all he's looking for is a trade for a, you guessed it, A727 that he can use to finish off his truck. I could have picked up a nice 440/727 for $50!

I've learned my lesson! When I come across a good deal, I'm going to snag it even if I'll never need it, because someday, somewhere, I'll find someone who does. :)

yessir, i have passed up my share of good deals on things i would never use only to have someone else needing it , and would have traded for things i need. i once tossed a slant in a ditch, only to have a guy needing one desperately enough to trade a BB for it.

You think he'd be interested in an A518?

I've got one from a 97 Dakota.

I was gonna use it but have decided to go gear vendors instead.

I may even have an A727.

I'll have to look under my 72 Charger (which would be a GREAT home for the 72 440).

It came with a small block that looks like a mid 80's 360, but I haven't checked the numbers.

I didn't want to hack up any of my floors for the 518, but it might not be a big deal in a truck.

Another lesson is not to throw stuff away. I had a really banged up set of small block valve covers sitting around for ever so I tossed them one day thinking why would any one need or want to use them.
Few days later buddy calls on a Sunday night seems his boy took his off to change the gaskets and decided to repaint them too. Sets them on a box in the driveway. Wife comes home and you guessed it ran them over. He called everyone we could think of looking for something to put the boys car back together so he could go to work Monday morning with no luck on a Sunday.
Lesson learned.

That's why I keep all my old parts, and why I check the Wanted section on the forum a couple times a week. I just gave away a ton of stuff to a guy working on a 73 in Georgia, and I'm still looking for people who need other parts I know I don't need. It's the lesson on buying stuff I don't need that I'm learning now. :)

YY1, there was a guy on the Ocala Craigslist who was dumping a bunch of 440s a couple of months ago. I think they'er gone now, but he had I think four of them.

My preference is to find some major POS car with a good 440/727 in it so when I do the swap I'll have everything I need to do it and won't have to go on another major scavenger hunt or pay top $$$ for stupid crap like brackets.

man , this is so true. i cant count the times ive tossed stuff that i really needed later on that i ended up buying again. stock manifolds, 2 barrels, intakes, valve covers , steel wheels and tires etc etc.... the list goes on and on. even core parts...

I wish that I still had every car, part, tool, or anything even remotely automotive that I've ever owned. But I'd need another 5 or 10 acres. LOL.
