Welcome to the other side of the street. Looks like it's in fairly good condition. You are starting out with a fairly desirable body style. Congrats on the project and the wife with good taste!

I believe Daisy Duke started out with one of those. Nice car.

been doing some research, came with a 318 2bbl auto, as far as I can tell this engine with it is a 273, casting number says 318, 273 also cast in block, nothing stamped on vin pad(replacement engine)?...looks like a 7.25 rear end and a 904 trans?.. am a chevy guy, this is all new to me...love this car so far

not really, she always wanted the white challenger from vanishing point, we looked but really couldn't afford one, we are also building a 1963 chevy c10 short/fleet, so budgets are shot, we found this 72 which is her birth year, and she fell in love with it...this is her plan for it,except the wheels

That is one good looking car if I say so myself! :) Looks like you are starting with a super nice project. Any color combos in mind? Any engine plans for the build? I am pretty sure it is a 318 if I am not mistaken, as that was the base engine for that car. I am sure someone will correct me if I am wrong on that one.

Didn't Daisy drive a 73/74 Roadrunner? I could very well be wrong because I spent most my time watching her haha.

I posted before I saw your post. Plum Crazy Purple is a beautiful color on our cars although that is more purply... is purply a word?

Welcome to the Mopar world. :) Looks like you're going to need a LOT of parts, but the good news is most of this year is reproduced. :) In other good news, since you're doing a clone, originality points don't count, so you've got a good deal of flexibility.

These highlights should help...

1. For the interior, 1971-1974 B body parts will work for this car. Some styling changed from year to year, and from model to model, but it all fits. The only real variance is the 74 cars had retractable seatbelts, so they have two piece lower quarter panel covers.

2. For the exterior, you need primarily 71-72 body parts. 71-74 hoods and trunk lids interchange, but that's it.

3. Roadrunner and Satellite hoods for 71-72 are different styles. The Roadrunner hood is different from yours, but if you want to do a clone with an air grabber, you've got the right hood already... you just need the air grabber insert and parts.

4. You've got the weakest drivetrain there is. :( I would replace with a 440 engine, 727 transmission, and 8.75 rear, but if you want to stay small block you can go with a 340/360, 727, and 8.25 rear... and if you live near north Florida I have a 8.25 rear you would be welcome to. :)

Cool, always like to hear about women who are interested in cars. My wife, doesn't understand and doesn't care, makes it tough at times.

that is great info, thanks much...the person we got it from has a fresh 383 he built for someone that never picked it up, also she absolutely wants a 4 speed..and as non stock as it is she wants the earlier hemi style hood scoop...I think it will look good

I am in Texas..but I might make a road trip for the rear end..lol..

Where at in Texas? I am in dallas, nice to have another mopar fan in the state. Your wife sounds pretty awesome, a purple roadrunner and a 4 speed!? My fiance wants a plum crazy 70 charger but it has to be a big block engine because she doesn't want a 318. I told her, thanks for picking one of the most expensive cars possible and a 318 is more than enough to get you into trouble. I dont even have a big block in my roadrunner! Even though I can't afford 2 mopars she says if it doesn't end in a 40, she doesn't want it lol. Saying this, I just realized she is a mopar snob haha. I'm just glad she loves old cars and wants to help me. It's such a huge bonus to have someone who wants to be involved in the process.

we live in Bandera, cowboy capital of the world..I really want to put a big block in it, but with 2 projects going at once it may get the small block put back in it for now, she has a volkswagon cabriotlet now, going up for sale to buy mopar parts, don't think she really knows what fast is...yet

You can find affordable big blocks online. From what I understand, you can build a pretty dang stout 400 and it's cheaper than a 440. At least that's what my brother said about his 400 when he was pricing it out. Plus 400s were options on that car too so its not unrealistic to see that engine in a 72.

okay, excuse my ignorance, will a 400 require changing the k member?

From what I have read on here, on the 72s the k-frame is the same so you should be okay there. You would probably want to upgrade to a 727 transmission but since you are going manual that may not matter. Like bruzilla said, you will want to upgrade your rear end too but I dont have experience in that area. Mine came with an 8.75 so i am just going to rebuild that o e You will also have to get the special 4 speed hump to make it a manual.
