Hi guys, I have a '71 Charger and I want to put on a light fiberglass hood with no inner structure. I'm also gonna put a 4in hemi hood scoop on it. So my question is, will 3 pins on each side of the hood hold it down or am I really pushing it? I'm 17 and have no experience with fiberglass what so ever.

light fiberglass hood with no inner structure.
Depends on what you want it for. With that hood you should be fine going through the drive-thru but it's going to flex all over the place at speed. The 4 inch scoop will actually stiffen it up but will likely catch air (like it's designed to do) and pull up at higher speeds. At least stiffen up the sides to give it some integrity.

By the way, I wish I had a Charger when I was 17. :) There's a fair amount of fiberglass info on this very site, start searching!

What should I stiffen it up with, how would you recommend I stiffen up. Sorry but like I said I'm new to this.

I only run 4 pins on my 64 Belvedere. 5" Hemi scoop. Car runs right around 150. It does flex up at the sides, probably should have 6. Compare the hood pic towards the end of the track (look at the sides) and the pic in the
burnout.

Yeah, I'll probably just stick to the safe side and run six of them. Plus will it hold up to street use?

I use 7 on my glass hood as its a thin hood and I have seen cars where the back center of the hood lifts some at speed so I went with seven pins and the hood does not lift at all at 125. Ron

I run 6. At well over 159 mph.
And heres my new hood. Ready for paint.

I've been thinking of adding one behind my scoop. At speed it lifts up about an inch. I'm sure at the right angle I could see the carb from the drivers seat. lol...

To the OP. Mine is a thin race hood. I reinforced it with a bunch of fiberglass. It isn't pretty underneath but it really helped... it still flexes quite a bit but I only have 4 pins in it.
Glad to see another young guy I joined this site when I was 18 (24 now) after picking up my 69'.

Yeah I'm seriously considering the 7th pin in the back of the scoop. I've had this car since is was 12ish. Since then, I've been infected with the MOPAR fever

A lot of guys run their hood pins on the core support which is o-k but you should have 1 or 2 pins at least 3 inches in front of the core support in the center also. I tell my clients to run 3 down each side and 1 in the front center and one in the rear. My hoods are race weight usually and run about 14-17 pounds, depends on the model and the customer. I have also made them 9 pounds for a 68 s/s Cuda. That customer actually used another pin for the hood from his carb pan. The worst hoods are the 63-64 & 67 Plymouth Belvederes. Those front ends are designed like a brick with no aero dynamics.

DVW THAT IS A FINE 64!!!
Just a stupid question, when everyone is saying "pins", are you referring to dzus fasteners?? Now my car is not running yet but it was an old drag car w/ 8.50 certified cage but it has 4 dzus down the sides, 3 across the back and 2 on the front corners...

My old car had Dzus. I got to thinking if the hood has to come off fast, how will that happen? Besides the pins look old school and that was the look I was shooting for. I agree about mounting them forward of the core support. Mine are. Look at the pic of the hood at speed, the nose isn't moving at close to 150.
