In the garage. Under the hood. Again.
Will original '64 axles mate up with a 489 case Sure-Grip,as far as splines go? The original r&p have noticeable play, and since the car's up on stands for brake work,I may as well look at replacing the center section. Which means I'll be looking for another 489 case for the 3.91 gears I planned to install next year.

Along those same lines...are these axles strong enough to handle a strong 440 and a 2500 stall converter? When I go to the track(down the road),I'll either run a set of used street tires or maybe narrow drag radials. I'm using HD springs and will have a snubber for now;S/S spring may be considered later,if they're needed.

As always,thanks for any help,guys!

Yeas, they fit the case---same spline count. Yes they will hold up just fine----but when the power level get high enough, you should think about upgrading. You may ask, when is the power level hight enough?....thats when things start breaking, so I really dont know for sure.

They do fit!but no way to adjust axle endplay.Up grade to 65 or later housing.

Getting a whole new housing wasn't in the works;how about an end bearing upgrade on the original(64) housing? So...you're saying that if I stick with a 741 c.s.(Mancini has bolt-in 741s with 3.73s and a posi for a fair price) I'll be good to go,as far as being able to keep the axle endplay correct? Am I correct in presuming that I can only go with a 65 housing(to go with the 489) because of spring perch location and overall length? '66 and later housings have wider spring perch locations,I think.

I'm discovering some "issues" with this ride that are, shall we say, upsetting. I'm hoping I haven't purchased a money pit;I realize any project can become that. I'm not looking for the cheap way out, just want to work with the stuff I've got. Replacing what I want to replace is one thing;replacing what I didn't plan to replace(on a large $cale) is financially draining and mentally numbing.

Thanks for any help/advice/off-color comments-it's all appreciated!

Al, does that 64 axle housing have the axle adjuster on the passenger side?If so, then lets go to plan A.
A. Get new gasket seals, repack the bearings as long as they are good, slide the axles back into the housing (741,742,or 489 center section, makes absolutely NO difference), button everything up, fill with lube and sure grip additive, finsh the brakes, bolt the stuff together, BURN THE HIDES OFF!!!!!

Plan B. Any axle housing with a 44 inch on center perch will fit (bolt right on in), then follow all of plane A......the down side is that axle maybe OVERALL WIDER, and different backspacing for the rear rims might be required if your gonna use some wide meats, then follow plan a. Any more questions, let us know.

guys i just tried to slip a 489 case in my 65 coronet where the 741 is and it wont fit the bottom 2 studs on the housing do not line up with the 2 holes in the 489 case mine has the axle adjuster on the pass side and the ring gear has a build date of 8/64 its is a early build car any suggestions or should i look at getting a new housing have access to a 68 housing?

Are you sure that you have an 8 3/4 rear? Something is fishy!!!

The endfloat on all pre 65 tapered axles is done with shims....the endfloat should be between 3 and 8 thou.

i did some research in 63 and 64 they had a 8 1/4 that used a 741 case everything about this rear looks like a 8 3/4 but appears it is a 8 1/4 the ring gear has a date of 8/64 and my car is a early built car looks like they put in a left over 64 rear in my car so now i need a different housing to be able to use my 489 case will a 68 b bodie 8 3/4 housing work with out any issues?thanks.

I put a '68 8 3/4 (supposedly from a GTX) in my '64 Belvedere. Bolted right in. And it was slightly narrower - giving me a little more breathing room for my 2756015 tires. Should work just fine for your '65. I didn't know the factory put 8 1/4 rears in B bodies. Of course, you never know what people did to these cars along the way over the 45 years they've been around.

Al,
There is a guy over on moparts called Doc differential that has new axles with green bearings and new brakes/backing plates to fit your housing and gets rid of the tapered axles and hubs. The cost was 600 for the package.

In case you up grade to a newer housing here are the dimensions from drum to drum all have 44 inch spring perch measurements:

64 60 7/8 inches (your current axel)
65thru67 59 1/2 inches
68thru70 60 1/8 inches
