Windage Tray Question

Hey all, my oil pan gasket is leaking (Whew! not the main seal) so I'm changing it while the motor is in the car. Got the pan and windage tray off no problem but I think it will be a problem putting the pan back with the tray. Do I need the windage tray as well? If so, its going to be a PITA. Its strictly a street driven car.

if it's just a street driven car, it's not really needed...

The windage tray is good for several hp. It's not that hard to install. I'd put it in since you have the pan off already.

I always put them on even for a stock build, but no, it's not needed to get to the store per say.

I'm about to do the same. I'm thinking about a windage tray with the gaskets part of the tray. Looks allot easier than sandwiching 2 gaskets between the regular tray.

if a tray was really worth it, Ma Mopar would have installed one on every car they made...might be worth it for a strip or race car, but not for your everyday grocery getter or cruiser

Holy crap! That molded gasket windage tray looks awesome. No silicon goop, no need for two gaskets. Ordering one tomorrow, thanks slepr1!

Not true.

They put it on there HP engines. Good for 15hp. For the cost of the gasket and extra sealant, I'd call it a win win.

yea, it is true..they are "not" on every engine made like I posted...maybe for the HP engines, but not for every day driver...not needed for street car

That one on Summit looks an awful lot like the one that was exclusive to Jegs for a couple years. I got one for Dad's GTX and the thing leaked big time and the front timing cover bolt holes did not line up that well. According to Jegs, they are NOT meant for stamped steel oil pans like the OE style ones.

I was amazed when I pulled the oil pan off my 77 HP 440 low compression engine, and found a windage tray, as well as a double roller timing chain. Judging by the amount of slack in the timing chain, I figured it was factory installed, and had some miles on it. I always install a windage tray on my builds.

I have used the Jegs one on my 440 stroker with a reproduction 6-QT oil pan and it sealed up great?

Was your reproduction oil pan a flat lip or did it have the rib going around the middle of the flat area where the pan bolts up? If you don't have this recessed rib in between the bolt holes, it will seal up fine. If you have a factory pan with this recessed area, it will certainly leak. Not a lot.... but it will leak!
