Hi ,my friend has a Challenger with a 440 in it.The problem is when he starts it it idles okay ,has soon as he puts it into drive it cuts right out .It is an auto transmission.anyone ever ran across this problem.Thanks for any help

well. if the engine runs alright while sitting there and not in gear i would suspect maybe the torque converter is locked up. only thing you can do about that without pulling the converter would be to rev it up real high and drop it in gear to try to break it loose

My 318 poly was killing out when engaging any gear. After checking timing ( which could not be set by timing light without killing the motor ) and checking vacuum ( 10-15 ) I diagnosed jumped timing. Well it had not jumped, but the timing chain was stretched so bad it compromised the valve timing. A fresh chain cured our condition.
 
Try jacking the rear tires off the ground and engaging drive without touching the brake at idle and see if it dies.Gotta start somewhere:edgy:
 
Can he rev it up in park? Would not advise dropping it in gear at a high rpm. Might just be a timing or fuel problem. Think simple first. What if any were the events before this problem took place?
