So I am standing at the deli counter at Stop & Shop… With one person in front of me and no one else in the vicinity 7pm on Fri night… I look at that the emo deli counter guy and he asks me to take a ticket… I look around me and look back at him and say are you serious? He says yes… And all I can think of is the airport scene from Meet the Fockers-I was very close to smacking him across the face with a pound of yellow American but did not want to get arrested over the holidays :angryfire:

I was at the pie kitchen with my wife and we were buying cookies and a pie , the kid would not let me pick what cookie I wanted in the row , had to go from front to back , I didn't get the cookie. Everything we got was stale we found out at home. I called the mgr and got a credit there , but we never went back anyway and never will.

My experience has been that if a store has a mondo-bizzaro policy, there's probably some ignorant customer who was the reason for it. My wife used to work at a Publix bakery, and I always got a laugh out of some of the stunts people would pull.

They required a number for service because some jerks had created spectacles because they were walking around the bakery section and looking, then someone would come up to the counter to actually order something, then the browser would get all incensed because they thought they should be next in line! In their minds everyone should have to wait for them to make up their minds and decide whether they wanted to buy something or not. So they would rant and rave, then write a letter to corporate where they changed the story to one of where they had been calmly standing in line and had been ignored, blah, blah, blah, and the store personnel ended up getting in trouble. So no ticket, no cookie.

Another rule they had to put in place that seemed ridiculous was people ordering personalized cakes had to bring in something printed with the person's name on it (a piece of paper, an envelope, a business card, etc.) They said it was to make sure they got the spelling right, but the real reason was people would come in and say "I want a cake that says Happy Birthday James" on it, then they would come back a few days later and want a refund because their cake said "Happy Birthday James" when it should have said "Happy Birthday Jim". They would claim the order taker took the order wrong, and would get a refund on the price. With the new rule, the buyer had to submit something they had written, or had been printed, and that put an end to that scam.

So when you see a store doing something dumb, it's usually because someone much dumber tried to scam them.

I find that a lot of the time it is people unhappy in their jobs or life situation and using their position to yield what little power they have in life.

Good point. See it all the time as well. My life sucks, let me spread the wealth...

You have a good point Bruzilla. Also, sometimes, it's the "rules" of the store, and employees can get in trouble, for not following them, from their supervisors.

I like to play the change game whenever I encounter someone that's trying to dump their attitude on me. Hand them the money in dollar bills and usually too much and then just as they put it on the register and start to make change, I'd say wait, I think I have the correct change and start searching in ALL of my pockets for it while they hand me back my bills and putting their change back in the drawer and after pulling out a bunch of pennies I would just not have the correct change. Makes them start all over again. THEN, look at my change and say, wait, I think you made a mistake and lay it all out and make them count it again. Ops, my mistake, it was right. Have a good day! :D

We've all seen stupid sh*% like that before. I actually had a manager at a Subway yell at me for using the wrong cup to get a cup of water at their drink machine. She picked up a cup from behind the counter and held it out and said "you have to use this cup for water". I said "If I'm not doing this right maybe you should move this damn drink machine behind the counter and pour the damn drinks yourself so that nobody can do it wrong". She actually turned red face and told me to leave the store. I tossed my sandwich on the counter and said "Give me my money back and you'll never see me again". They did and they haven't.

Might want to be careful playing that game. You might end up spending some time with law enforcement. :) There's a scam that runs just the way your little game goes, but rather than try to irritate the employee it is meant to confuse them. The scammer tries to confuse the clerk by changing amounts and change, and a lot of stores have policies that if a customer tries to change their payment with cash more than once, the clerk has to summon store security and security has to call the cops. Then you get to sit in an office while they run your background to see if you've ever been busted for this before, get interrogated, and eat up a lot of time trying to convince John Law you aren't a scammer.

I have to ask, did you pay for the water? Probably not, which is why she said you had to use the special cup. The cost of cups, lids, and straws are minor, but multiplied by thousands or tens of thousands and they add up. Printed cups cost money, as do lids and straws, so they don't want you using them for free water when they have even cheaper cups for that.

No, I didn't pay for the water and I understand that they probably have good reasons for their procedures. My point is that the store manager acted like I had taken a crap on the floor. She didn't have to yell at me and dress me down in front of everybody for not knowing the rules and procedures for every store that I've ever walked into. I've worked in customer service businesses my entire life and I've never treated a paying customer like that. If I did I would probably be disciplined or fired.

And sometime just some simple logic should prevail... damn Idiots, rude & lack of common sense...
