You don't turn over spray paint cans to clean nozzles any more?

As long as I have used spray cans, going back into the 1960's, I have always been told to turn the cans upside down and spray until no color comes out. That is how to clear the nozzles. I was working on a couple of projects today, using both Krylon and Rustoleum paints. Neither ever cleared up when I did this. I read the labels, and saw that the instructions did not say to do that any more. They just said to wipe off the nozzle. How long has it been this way? These cans both had the big wide nozzle caps instead of the little red ones that pop out easily. (I guess I need to start paying more attention to labels nowadays..)

There used to be only a couple different nozzles found on spray bombs. Now there are many and most brands won't swap. Some that are about an inch in diameter don't have that great of a pattern. The ones that are about 5/16" in diameter will punch a hole in the end of your finger before the can is empty. They're so hard to push down.

Then there's the easy press nozzle. The blue one with the pin in the center. You can even turn the center to change the pattern from vertical to horizontal.

They're the ones I prefer. Once they were known as the Sherwin Williams tips. You can find them on Dupli-Color cans and a couple of others. These you still hold the can upside down to clear the nozzle. A lot of the cans out now won't clear when doing this. You really don't know until you try it. More than likely it's a money saving move by the manufacturer.

Those blue nozzles even spray a fan pattern.

very nice.

Been years since buying any rattle can paint. My last batch came from an estate sale and it's been over 5 years since working one of those....
