I am thinking of taking the realley's off the Coronet and putting the steel wheels back on color matched to the car with dog dish caps.. The caps I have are from a dart so they are not correct but look good.

What do you all think?

Ill give you my honest opinion with it. Somehow with this car if you have a set of tires on the other set i would keep both, the truth be told is it would look great with the steel look and dog dish, but at the same time the rally's look good to. It would be nice to have both sets to change over once i awhile. Probably not want you want to hear but either set is going to look good on your car. It would be great if you could find the correct center caps though..

What is correct for that year? IMO dog dish is ok but is it stock or optioned? Personally I thing mag 500's would look good

+2 for having 2 sets...I've got the Mag 500's and the original set of steelies with dog dish...I like both, so I kept both and can do what I like!

Nice car BTW...they'll ALL look good on it.

Thanks guys... I think I am going to leave the ralleys on it for now and worry with the steel wheels later...

I like the mag 500 but i think every body has them on these cars...

Are your dog dishes 9" or 10"?
67 and earlier use 10", and the wheels that accept them can be tough to find.
68 and later use 9", and those wheels are easy to find.
I have 68 9" dishes (kind of tough to find), and 15x7 5th Ave wheels that fit them.
I also have a set of correct 10" 66 dishes (set on ebay right now for $60), but I have bought eight 14" wheels that accept 10" dishes, and have ended up with 7 DIFFERENT styles!

That is a very nice car, but then I have a soft spot for YY1 66 Coronets!

I have that 15" body color steelie/dog dish set and a 14" Magnum 500 set (and a 14/15" Rallye set) ( and a 14/15 Keystone set).

hey Alex... I don't know the size as Charles picked them up at the Perry swap meet this past saturday.. They are the redline dog dish for the darts...

I will be at Moultrie swap meet on Saturday.... You coming up? They said it is so big that you can't walk it in a day

Those should be 9".
1980's era diplomats and furys had 15x6 that will work with those, 5th Avenues had 15x7.
Aspens and Volares had 14s that will work. Should be junk yard finds.
Of course cop wheels also work.

Man I JUST made that drive!!! I'd love to, but I don't think I could handle that so soon.
Next weekend is the big one at Daytona. That's 100 miles one way for me. Not a heck of a lot of Mopar stuff, but I also get to pass my favorite old car salvage yard on the way, and they have something I know I need for my 73.

I'm also going to look at a 72 Charger this Sunday. It's supposed to be a factory EV2 (Hemi Orange) 400 2bbl car with Rallye doors and a rust free body. We'll see!
I have all the other parts (hood, taillights, rear valence and tips), plus hidden headlights- to complete the Rally package.

If you decide to go the steel/cap route, your body color would look outstanding with red lines.

Personally I like the deep steel A12 look (no caps) with chrome lug nuts or a set or period correct mags. The rallys on it now don't do it for me, however Magnum 500's could look good. Looks like a nice clean car for sure!

Id like to see the steelies painted black w/hubcaps (may be a little too much copper) or else leave the rallys on

None of the above in your poll.

The rallyes look totally out of place on the older cars.

This whole idea of the steelies and hub caps came about from people doing a as the "broadcast sheet said" OEM as factory delivered restoration. The old guys that had these cars new laugh at the whole thing as it was just not cool in the day. If you guys want to buy that steelie/hub cap look Kool-Aid go ahead but understand the the guys that bought these great cars new that you are now restoring are laughing at you.

The steel wheels with hub caps make it look like a performance car ordered new that was immediately going to the tire store for custom wheels. Everybody ordered them that way because it was standard and no one was going to spend extra money for wheel covers that they were going to be thrown away.

Period correct day two for this car would be Crager S/S, Torque Thrust Ds or Keystone Klassics.

Many of these cars ended up with the 67-68 Magnum 500s (Ford name for the Chrysler version but it is easier for most here that don't know the real name to understand what I am referring to) and they look GREAT on them.

I have said it many times in the past for like type threads, the young guys that bought these cars new couldn't wait to get the aftermarket wheels on their cars because the factory didn't offer anything "cool" until 67 on Mopars.

I've been PM'd to ask for pics, so I thought I'd link to a prevous thread:

http://www.forbbodiesonly.com/moparforum/showthread.php?p=158265

The link shows the correct for 66 10" caps on a 67 R/T and the 68 style 9" caps on a 67 440.

Magum 500's were also available aftermarket by the manufacturer, Motor Wheel.
I believe some dealerships were also Motor Wheel resellers, but can't confirm any Chrysler/Dodge dealers.

The sticker in the center would have been red with crossed checkered flags, rather than the white circle on OE Chrysler.

YY1, I just gave you a thank you for posting that picture. I did not realize that Motor Wheel Corp. actually called them Magnum 500s. Ford did as an option from the factory and I ASSUMED they coined the name. I have always corrected people for calling them Magnum 500s on Mopars because Mopar refered to them as "styled steel road wheels." Now that I see this ad I will have to change my thinking to either name to be correct from the factory since the wheel manufacturer actually called them that.

You learn something new every day, Thanks again.

I think color keyed steels w/caps would look great, but go with 15 inch wheels. Like many others have mentioned - the Mag 500's look awesome on these cars, I'm contemplating putting them on my '66 convertible. Ditch the ralleys - just don't look right on the early cars.

:iamwithstupid: NONE OF THE ABOVE 1st thing being said, do what you like the most, but I would suggest to use at least some 15" diam. wheels for sure, it helps the ride & fills the wells better than the original 14" diam. wheels do, IMHO I would use the period correct wheels, "Road Wheels" or the generic name Magnum 500's would be nice but I prefer a individual look instead of what everyone else dose, just don't put something "too modern for that era of car", it just doesn't look right too me, many Keystones {not my favorite} Crager S/S, American Racing or Anson Slots or even some Halibrands Salt Flat Mags or Slots {my personal favorite, or cheaper knock offs} also are great choices... It's your car do what makes you happy if you like the Ralleys keep them or use them for another project, the steelies & dog dish caps, "like 696pack said", weren't on too many cars for too long, back in the day, except maybe some of the older folks or sleepers maybe {I personally do like the look on a correct restoration, but not on a custom or resto-rod type car}... Nice car get it some jewelery or bling...

WOW....magnum 500's back in the day cost $79.95 ! i just paid 10 times that much for mine. HOLY INFLATION BATMAN !
