A833 4-Spd Swap for 5 or 6 Speed? B Body

Here in Oklahoma there is Blumenthals. They specialise in semi's but do have a great reputation. You may expand your search and look at heavy truck repair shops.

You could always do it yourself. The more I take apart (and get back together) the more I realise this stuff is not rocket science and is fun to take apart. My next adventure will be rebuilding my 727 and NP 203 in my 78 Power Wagon.

I am number 401 on the customer list for the new aluminum 833. And that is if it ever actually gets produced. Just spoke to them again, and I guess another company (that is known for clutches) announced or was about to announce a bolt in 5 speed for our old Mopars. So Passon felt pressured to announce their intentions first. And then the "clutch" company never did come through with their trans. Too bad, as I have always had their clutches in my Mopars, and I would have no doubt the tranny would be a good one. So for now, I will wait. No way am I cutting up my Bee. It's just NOT that terrible to have to drive around with ONLY a 4 speed. Could be worse, could be an automatic! LOL…JUST KIDDING!!!

Automatic???? What's that? :) ... Oh,... now I remember, that's what my girlfriends car has.:rolling:

It's less about the ability, and more about lack of time ... and downtime of the car(Unless I do it in the winter). I did the transmission in my Harley. Wasn't all that hard, works well, but it took a several weeks due to the inability to have more than a couple hours at a time to work on it.

.

Oh no…you are going to start a riot….LOL.

I will just wait patiently for a 5 speed. Don't need a 6 speed. Just want that overdrive 5th gear. The Dana in the Bee has 3.54 gear. Kind of a great all around gear for a big block car. Of course, that is just my opinion. Your's may vary. But once I have an overdrive gear, I will probably end up with rear gear somewhere between 3.73 to 4.10. Would really like to start doing club clash nights at Bandimere Speedway on Friday nights.

Once (or if) a 5 speed bolt in tranny gets produced, I will buy one. But only after I let some of you guys buy one first, and test it out, and let me know if it blows up or not. THEN I will buy one. And to be honest, I hope 2 or 3 companies DO produce a bolt in 5 or 6 speed. Competition is good. But that kinda goes without saying. I have seen a few of the 5 and 6 speed installs, and holy crap some of the cars are hacked up.

Yea ... that sounds like a plan. And as far as the Auto/4-Spd thing. If I was a serious drag racer, I'd go with the 727, but on the street, I like the 4 speed. FYI - I just read the #1 deterant for theft from joy riders and amature car thieves ... is a manual tansmission. Go figure. :icon_scratch:

YES!!!!! I'm RICH!!

Holy crap! I had never thought of that, but it makes perfect sense. And it will get worse and worse every year. And now we have cars that stop for us, check our blind spot for us, use radar to track targets…oh, wait..that was on something different. So car thieves will be unable to function at all if they see 3 pedals on the floor.

I've been trying to come up with my million dollar idea for right about 50 years now, and no luck so far. So I am thinking of a "4 speed in a bag" for all you slushbox drivers. You can pull the simulated clutch pedal out of the bag, hang it from velcro next to your brake pedal, and the bag goes over your console shifter and has realistic looking Pistol Grip shifters on the sides of the bag….LOL..And GEICO will give you a 20% discount on your insurance if you use this anti-theft device full time.

I'll have to think a little harder about how you column shifted slush box weenies can benefit. Might take just one more beer...:th_krazy::th_krazy:

Hemibird,

Just came across this post. Considering you might rebuild your 4 speed, have you given any thought into swapping the guts out with the A833 O/D guts? I just finished swapping out a 727 with an A833 (cast iron case) with O/D guts in my 66 Coronet. It has a 360 magnum with 3.55 out back and cruises on the freeway at about 2,200 RPM @ 70 mph. I couldn't be happier.

I'm considering a lot of things. The original transmission will be rebuilt original. Just picked up another a833 thinking I would maybe rebuild it with some sort of OD ... BUT ... it's a 1969, and they put the full VIN number in 69. It starts with .... Hold your breath .... XX29J. :headbang: I about $#!+ when he gave me the VIN Number. Going to pick it up Saturday. Might try to see if the original car is still around before I do anything with it.

DONT CUT THE HEMI CAR....i would look into the passion...im putting a tremec 6 speed tr6060 in mine. a little cutting involved. i would not do this to a real HEMI car. jmo
Hi!
Is this TR6060 from some donor like 2009 Challanger?
And, did You left transmission with original Belthousing?
And question No3. ..did You made a transmission support member Your self ..custom ?

THX!! Good job!!

Was wondering if anyone has swapped out a B Body 4-speed for a 5 or 6 speed tranny, and if it was mostly "Bolt In", or required a huge amount of work?

I have a 1968 Hemi Roadrunner with the 4:10 rear end gears. The old A833 is moaning, groaning and whining quite a bit. I was toying with the idea of swaping it out for a 5 or 6 speed overdrive transmission, that would allow the engine to run at lower RPM's on the highway, going to and from events. I'd eventually freshen up the original tranny and keep it in the garage for the "Next" owner to put in if he wanted to.

Any personal experience or directions to go for information would be appreciated.
Yeah I did this swap about 40 years ago. Might have been the first guy with a 5 speed in a Mopar. I bought one of the first Doug Nash 5 speeds available and had it configured with the Mopar 18 spline input. Install was way too complex for me to handle at the time so I had to hire a street rod fabricator to build all the custom parts. He did a nice job and I've been driving it every since.
