So I go to pull the cam out of my 440 thinking it was a purple shaft cam only to find out it's not. Can anyone help with a number I found on the cam? 891597. No other markings.

The actual part numbers on MP cams didn’t appear until close to the end of their run.
Prior to that there was a code with paint dawbs.

The last MP cam I had my hands on was a 528 solid I purchased new myself.
No paint on it anywhere.

I posted a couple links in my previous post where your number came up wrt Mopar cam discussions.

Do you know what “parkerized” is on a cam?
It’s the black finish on the cam lobes.
If your cam is parkerized, it’s almost certainly not a MP cam.
If the lobes are not parkerized, it probably is a MP cam.

This is what you used to get…….
This is a cam from the 90’s.
It’s pretty obvious it’s a purple shaft from the purple paint and non-parkerized lobes.
No numbers on it at all……. Just a couple paint marks on the back.

In one of PR's links they mention measuring lobes. Do at least two intakes and exhausts. That will help straighten the curves

Interesting. I guess a machine shop can tell if it's been parkerized?

As I mentioned…….
If the lobes are black, cam is parkerized.
Lobes are shiny metal color…..not parkerized.

I’ve never seen a parkerized MP cam.
I’ve never seen any other brand aftermarket FT cam that wasn’t parkerized.

Not parkerized-

My new Edelbrock cam is parkerized. A new word for me. The lobes are black. I think, but do not know, that this has something to do with the cam brake in. I will run the engine for the required twenty minutes, before a road test. I am about one week away from blast off.
