Hi

What should be the PSI for a stock 1969 383. I want to check each cylinder and just want to know before hand what a healthy stock 383 should be.

I know it will vary but Im I looking for 130 psi? or higher

Can seems sluggish and want to pull engine out to clean up but may do a rebuilt has 100k on it

Thanks

hot, warm engine will test better.
Do you have a 2 bbl bottom end or 4bbl ?
A used 2bbl engine in the 130s would not be that bad if the plugs are looking good.

It's very likely the timing chain is shot. As the chain stretches cam timing gets retarded a bunch and make them poochy.

Hey

Thanks for the info

Test results all were about 100 per cyinder
Engine was pulled out and taken down to block

Pistons had scraps along sides. Maybe previous owner ran winging with out air filter

Doing total rebuild now

Thanks for info

Check the 69 FSM. My 67 FSM has the compression specs for each engine, 2bbl & 4bbl as applicable. 67 383 4bbl spec is 130 - 165 psi or 125 - 155 psi for the 2bbl.
