Not using heater or anything. Had no idea coolant ran under here. Not sure what this compartment is either. Any ideas?

That’s your heater box. It contains your heater core. Coolants runs through the heater core at all times, no matter if you have the heater on or not. As mentioned above, you need to replace the heater core or have it repaired by a radiator shop.

Is it bad to be driving it until this is fixed?
Not likely, but watch your coolant level. Your carpet and floor pan will get wet.

Replacing the heater core is a nasty job, depending on how old your back is. If you never need to use the heater, the alternative is to get rid of the heater hoses, and cap off the four nipples.

loop the hoses; and for your safety and the safety of others, have a mechanic look over the entire car

It’s had a few light look throughs, anything they need to check specifically? They said I need a new pan soon but that’s about it

62 year old car...... think safety.........old, subpar repairs, brakes, brake line rust/rot, steering/suspension, rubber hoses on fuel lines, wiring issues (fire hazards)

unless these things are relatively fresh, or at least inspected thoroughly, there will be problems at some point

Pan? Which one? And why did they suggest that?

That model should be a very easy box to remove.

Loop it per eldubb440 post if you want to keep driving it

Pull it and send it to Glen Ray

Compared to newer cars, these are cake to replace. Most newer stuff, late 70 & up are a lot of work. Some must have most of the dash removed to get to the heater core.

Until you get it bypassed or replaced, stay away from using defrost.
That will likely fog up the windows causing visibility issues.

I just put a heater core in my Wifes 63 valiant. It took about 2 hours, and that included a beer break (or 2). Remove the hoses, remove the 3 cables, remove the 4 nuts around the heater motor and don't forget the J hook in the fresh air vent. Before hooking up the hoses loop one hose back into block and flush the system thoroughly and put in new antifreeze,,,,DONE!!!!
