Set the initial timing to 13 degrees today and have the idle mixture screws about 1 3/4 out with 17 inches of vacuum. Running good so far, hopefully I don't foul the plugs right away again. Only have about 4 weeks left and I'll have to put it away for Winter.
Yesterday I got the carbs back on, took it for a short drive to warm it up and then adjusted my fuel bowl levels. Shut it down and changed the plugs and oil. Today I'll check my initial timing and re-adjust my idle mixture. So far on the first drive, it ran good, started good, idled good.
That looks just like my set up, only you have much better heads :). If its not too much trouble, could you send me a picture of your fuel log set up? I don't really like the way I have mine.
I went to put in a new power valve tonight, I grabbed a hold of the old one in the metering block and it twisted right off by hand. It wasn't tight at all. I looked at the book and they are supposed to be tightened to 120 in./lbs. Could this have been the cause of my plug fouling? Maybe if...
If I remember correctly, it was reading around 6 psi when my gauge was still working. Now my gauge seems to be bad because the needle is bouncing around so much its hard to tell.
Another thing that has me curious is that I really have to adjust my float nut almost all the way down to keep the fuel level at the bottom of the sight plug. I have to crank them down almost to the point of running out of threads.
I have mechanically actuated outboards with replaceable jets. I'll replace the PV and hopefully get the carbs back on this weekend with a new set of plugs and see if I'm still fouling.
I have the center carb apart now. I wonder if there is a way to tell if the power valve is bad? I have spare 6.5 and will try putting that in.
Since I've checked just about everything else, I'm now wondering if my fuel pump might be putting out too much pressure, thus causing my plug...
Not sure on the cam specs (it was built prior to my ownership), but I was told is a mild purple cam.
I had the idle set at about 800 hot.
Idle vacuum is at about 16 inches.
PV is 6.5
It did backfire through the car a couple of times prior to getting my idle mixer screws set correctly.
Choke is...
Float levels are good. Gaskets are okay, they are just slid over a bit in the pic. I took the carbs apart and they look really good, although I have 64 jets in the center carb and 82 in the outboards. I might change the center to 62 and 81 for the outboard carbs.
I've been having a lot of problems with plug fouling lately and after a lot of trial and error trying to adjust timing and idle mixer, I decided to pull the carbs to inspect them. I pulled the center carb and you can see in the pictures all the carbon in the intake manifold. Also the lower...
Anybody have experience with pulling the heads with the engine still in the car. Any challenges or problems to be aware of. I suspect I might have some worn valve guides
and am considering pulling the heads to get some work done, but don't really want to pull the engine out of the car.
So I've seen many conflicting answers about whether or not the tunnel has to be modified in this string of posts. I have a factory 4-speed. So is the final official answer that my stock shifter location would have to change. Neither American Powertrain or Silver Sport has a solution that...
