    440 Compression/quench/cam questions

I would consider this. You don’t need a machine shop. You could do this with some simple home tools.

    Compression test hose #4 & #6 cylinders

That’s what I do. I think it is easier than changing the plug.

Help me tear down and inspect my 440..

I guess I didn’t make clear in my last post that I was referring to good lifters, but I did in post #96. Not sure going back 15 years is far enough. And also to be clear we are only talking about aftermarket Hydraulic cams/lifters for BBM.

Help me tear down and inspect my 440..

Let me try to put a finer point on it. I assume you know what valve float is, is that correct? It is simply when the force of the valve train (mass x acceleration) is greater than the force of the valve spring. Essentially, the lifter loses contact with the cam lobe around max lift and then...

Help me tear down and inspect my 440..

When you could get high quality lifters with tru-arc retainers, racers/performance enthusiasts set the preload at or near zero. I set my lifter preload at 0.003. I could run 7000 rpm. Unlikely you can do this with today’s aftermarket HFT lifters. And with that, just run what you have.

Wait, are you saying you don’t like mustard on ice cream?

Conversion kit to replace A727 with A518/46RH transmission

This. I don’t think folks realize the cost to manufacturer low volume parts. I think we’re getting pretty close to the point where some stuff will no longer be made when current inventory is gone. Indy wants $1040 for the 440 2D aluminum intake. The market for that intake is pretty low.

Just seen a nice looking old Craftsman RAS on Marketplace. The price was reduced from $100 to Free.

Bushing six pack rods for 1.094 pins

Thanks. Not sure if you already stated it, but are you planning to lighten the piston and pin, or live with the 1075 gram weight. How light do you think you can get them? Seems like removing 125 grams would be pretty easy and make a big difference on parts life at rpm.

I asked this question before Christmas. You did not answer.

MLS Cometic Vs Felpro 1009 with Aluminum Heads

    Fel-Pro 17059 is 0.039 compressed with a 4.500” bore.

MLS Cometic Vs Felpro 1009 with Aluminum Heads

Yes. But you cannot ignore the history of reported failures of the 1009 while none for the larger bore Fel-Pro gaskets.

MLS Cometic Vs Felpro 1009 with Aluminum Heads

He’s just speaking from experience. The 1009s fail with aftermarket aluminum heads from time to time despite the manufacturer’s recommendation.

What are your Mopar goals for 2025?

All of you folks are way more ambitious than I am. Maybe it will motivate me.

What are your Mopar goals for 2025?

I purposely said it's "generally" reflection of price. Unfortunately, no one seems to be without some quality issues today. But it still makes sense to stack the deck to your favor, IMO. If we're talking specifically roller lifters, I like and would use again Isky Red Zones, and probably...
