MLS Cometic Vs Felpro 1009 with Aluminum Heads

The Fel-Pro 1009 fits the bore okay at 4.350, but just barely clears the combustion chamber without overhang with my 440 Source heads. The 8519 are sized for a larger 4.505 bore and are half the price of the 1009.

Same as the Felpro which I believe is.030?

Waiting for an explanation of the difference between the marine gasket and the 1009?
Fel-Pro 1009 is .039 compressed with a 4.410 bore.
Fel-Pro 8519 is .039 compressed with a 4.505 bore.
Fel-Pro 1105 and 1039 are .051 compressed with 4.590 bore.

We ran them on aluminum heads 12.5 compression. No problems. Easy to blame a head gasket for being the failure. My experience is a gasket fails for a reason. Most of the time you will never get the full story.
Yes. But you cannot ignore the history of reported failures of the 1009 while none for the larger bore Fel-Pro gaskets.

Sorry to hijack.....I'm in this same situation. My block was decked 40 yrs ago (engine in the car now & due for a valve job) Would it be smooth enough for Cometics or were block deck finish specifications different back then?
40yrs ago may be a rough cut. I wouldn't take a chance on cometics unless i was absolutely sure of deck finish.

Standard bore is 4.320. My block is .030 over making it now 4.350

just to clarify. Are these gasket specs for different bores the inside diameter of the fire ring?

If so it would seem that the 1009 with a bore diameter of 4.410 would be large enough. If not just how much “extra” diameter is needed for reassurance?

Are we talking 1009 failure's on engines bored larger?

Just how much material inside the fire ring would be needed when choosing a head gasket bore diameter?

Thanks for the input.

The larger the bore the greater the failure rate. When the fire ring burns thru it torches the alum between the cylinders cutting a groove in the head surface. Why even think about or try to talk yourself into this when all you have to do is pick a safer gasket and be done with it. I'm pretty sure the melting point of alum is nearly the same as combustion temps.

My point was its easy to blame a very popular gasket when a very very high percentage of failures were installer errors. Deck and head surface warped, fire ring into the hole, old bolts instead of studs, heavy nitrous use, and the list goes on. Along with them used on a 400 low deck which was already larger bore than a 440 and also very popular on stroker motors. I fully agree that the poster should make sure this gasket will work. As said there are options when in doubt.

I have no problem removing the cylinder heads again and replacing the gasket if that means I will have a better chance of success.
I’m new to the use of aluminum heads and sifting through the information. I appreciate the input. I’m trying get my head wrapped around the effort by first understanding the difference in the head gaskets because I don’t want to do this again. Nor do I want to risk damaging the very expensive Trickflow heads.
Having said that. There have been two larger bore gaskets mentioned that are the same crushed .039 dimension.

If you had to rate them or choose would you install the

Felpro 10759 with the 4.50 bore?
Felpro 8519 with the. 4.505 bore?

Are these gaskets all composite gaskets with stainless fire rings? They are so similar in bore diameter so are they different in construction?

Or a marine gasket that is better? than these two gaskets?

The 17059 is the marine gasket.

victor reinz 611033200 has the same ones too. Mahale makes them for victor

I used both the Mahle graphite and composites there the same specs as for size and thickness. graphite 15.00 each and the composites are 25.00 each. I think both are better than the fel pro.
