Just to close this out because it was bothering me, I went and very carefully (minus any blinders) looked at the ports and plumbing. In order for this to work the the plumbing MUST be as follows;
The top (OUT) port of the engine to the OUT port on the filter housing
The bottom (IN) port of the...

It doesn't look like a hex. Two ways to tell for sure:
1) Measure the diameter of the can, they are different size.
2) put an Allen wrench in there and see if it's a hex.
You don't use a bolt to install the pulley, you press it on.
I cut off the end of an Allen wrench to put in the hex hole...
I spent some time sorting out the water tanks and working to finish them. The driver side tank was nearly done just needing paint and some details. The passenger side is still in process but coming along nicely.
