    Starter, relay or solenoid?

I have taken Black_Sheep's advice and ordered an NOS one.

    Starter, relay or solenoid?

Interesting! $45 though... Mind you, that's about the same as a Carquest "Premium" one.

    Starter, relay or solenoid?

The battery was/is fine, I did check though! On my 57 I had voltage drop big time when a terminal got corroded, so I always check there too. I think this may be a modern relay, the body and terminals are very very bright. Is there a source that’s better than others? I normally go to Napa or...

    Starter, relay or solenoid?

Quick fix! Neutral switch tested fine, jumped relay and it cranked, so in frustration I tapped the relay enthusiatically with a screwdriver handle. And that fixed it! For now anyway - time for a new one just in case.

    Starter, relay or solenoid?

Thanks, appreciate the responses. I also just watched Dead Dodge Garage's video on this exact problem. When I get a minute I'll jump the relay terminals (easist thing to get to - car has headers so the starter connections are a pain to access) and also test the neutral switch. The oil light...

    Starter, relay or solenoid?

Hi, I don't know why I can't get my head around this today, but anyway... Car: 1966 Coronet, 318 with a 383/727 swap. Mini starter. Symptoms: Power in car is fine. Headlamps, horn all work. Car started fine a few days ago (I've been testing my steering box for leaks, changed a hose and some O...

    Yet another timing problem!

Close this off.. it’s all back together, everything works, even the gas gauge and clock! Although with an aftermarket sender the gauge is wrong. Whatever. And the odometer broke. Meanwhile, the timing is fine, maybe I could back off a degree of initial but it starts well. The key to running...

    Yet another timing problem!

Finally back on the car. Sorted out the gas gauge, installed a relay for the electric fan, tidied up some other wiring, swapped the trans pan for a cast one so NO leaks now - progress! Tried to start her up a couple of weeks back, and it ran on maybe 6. WHAT? Somehow, while sitting for a few...

    Yet another timing problem!

I’m still waiting to get the kit to adjust total timing which is clearly needed of course.

    Yet another timing problem!

I think the issue of idle is largely solved. I guess I should have mentioned that I have a 4 hole spacer, but I didn’t notice much of a difference with or without. It should help heat soak though. I also checked the vacuum passages under the carb, and Geoff is absolutely correct, there are no...

    Yet another timing problem!

thanks! I ordered the keys and springs, will be delivered in a few days and I’ll report back.

    Yet another timing problem!

Thanks! So you’re suggesting total mechanical advance at 34? I’m not racing, just cruising (or more accurately, wrenching! One day…). Mainly I don’t want to be throwing gas fumes out the back so bad nobody can breathe near it! Right now I’m in the middle of swapping out the bent, leaky trans...

    Yet another timing problem!

Thanks! Doug, I appreciate your analysis, no need to get all twisted up about it! I already said I’m going to address it, but surely the best way to learn is to ask?

    Yet another timing problem!

Just to add, there are a bunch of posts here and other forums stating that 42* total is fine. Such as this one Post in thread 'Setting the timing on a 383' Setting the timing on a 383

    Yet another timing problem!

I will certainly check the total timing. It’s a pain to adjust, but as I said I was working on the idle to start. Leo, I’m not sure what you’re saying about the carb? It works fine, all passages clear, float height correct etc. The plugs are equivalent to an NGK 5 heat range. I’ll get the...

    Yet another timing problem!

Hi! Reporting back… First, I made a mistake. It’s an Edelbrock 1407 which makes it 750CFM, manual choke. It does have heat range 6 plugs already, I use Champion Copper. I used to use NGK in everything but think they’ve gone downhill. I did some tweaking this morning and have some good...

    Yet another timing problem!

Thanks! I checked the wiring from the distr. to the 6AL and polarity is correct (unless the distributor is manufactured incorrectly). I will indeed mark the balancer to get a more accurate assessment of timing and report back. interesting that 30* of initial is ok, then I guess I need to make...

    Yet another timing problem!

1405, so 600 with manual choke.

    Yet another timing problem!

Big-A, do you mean that 30+ at idle is ok?

    Yet another timing problem!

I have no idea if the cam was degreed, I bought it as a badly running project. I’ve sorted out a lot of issues already, now down to this. i think it’s rich at idle because the plugs are black and it stinks when idling. It seems to clean up as it’s revved. It does idle, yes, but it’s very antI...
