I have a 73 Road Runner 318 with a 3 speed manual transmission. I rebuilt an A833 OD trans and have the correct bellhousing and a new Hurst shifter setup. I started the swap today and I’m hoping it’s all going to fit. The shifter on the 3 speed seems to sit aft and up from the trans mount. I guess I’m worried the shifter on the 4 speed isn't going to fit where it should. Somebody tell me it’ll be fine.

We cannot tell you that at this point, need more info. Post a picture of the drivers side of the tail housing on your 4 speed. And your 3 speed.

Dimensionally the two transmissions should interchange. I know the shifter mount is in the same place for the OD as the standard close ratio and I have both the “B” and “E” on this unit. It’s not an “A” body trans. I’m just worried there will be interference issues with the shifter but there shouldn’t be. I mean they came from the factory with 4 speeds.

I'd put the shifter, mount, and rods on the OD unit while it's still out of the car.

Then you'll know.

Do you have the rods for the OD application and shifter position?
(they are just 4 speed rods with the 3-4 rod turned upside down)

71 up B body 4 speeds have a unique adaptor for the shifter box to trans if I remember right. Not sure what a 3 speed for that yr used?

Do you currently have a bench seat or buckets? there are two shifters with different mounting locations and different floor hump.

Thats is correct, now it is coming back...some!!!! I had a 71 Runner way back I had gathered all the OEM parts to change over to a 4 speed. That stuff was hard to find back then> Brewers Performance is a good source for all things 4 speed.

Bucket seats. I have the shifter mounted to the four speed with the 3/4 lever up side down. I’m just gonna pull the 3 speed and sit it in the floor beside it. I think I’m worried about a non issue. I called and got the shifter from Hurst based on my application.

Here is a comparison of the bench seat shifter and the bucket seat shifter. Bench seat shifter mounts on front mounting holes and uses a "dog bone" bracket that pushes it back in between the two normal positions.

Buckets and console and buckets and no console or buddy seat got the long hump and a short shifter.

Buckets and buddy seat got the short hump and long shifter, same as bench seat.

I have buckets and a buddy seat. The Hurst shifter I have is looooong. I’ll know more tomorrow.

I'm not familiar with the 3 speed rods, but they might work if they attach to the trans the same.

Of course you will need a reverse rod.

Brewer's performance is the go to place for Mopar manual transmission parts.
Their site is VERY informative as well, listing part numbers and showing pictures of almost any part for any setup.

Like I mentioned above I called Hurst tech and asked them for the correct shifter and linkage kit for my car. I gave them the specifics and the setup they told me to use mounts directly to the fwd shifter pad on the trans which puts it about 6” forward of the cutout in the floor. The three speed has a dog bone bracket that locates it back and up. I want to stay with a round ball shifter. I’ll call Brewers tomorrow and see if they can set me up. Also, I could not get the trans out without pulling the bellhousing loose and dropping it as well. Am I doing something wrong?

I know this is a 2-year-old thread, but do you still have the three speed shifter, if so can you shoot me a picture of it, is it the short one like the E body, or longer with a slight Bend like the 70 B body, thanks

It is packed away with all the other take off parts. I’ll see if I can get to it.

@scottyv here is a pic I found showing the factory 3 spd set up from my car with bucket seats but no console and a 4spd with bucket seats. Hope it helps.
