With the mess of wiring on our 75-79 B bodies has anyone done a 1 wire alternator conversion with a built in voltage regulator?

I have used one wire alternators before and swapped back to original. Problem was they dont charge at low rpm. I believe they kick in at over 1500 rpms which was a problem for me at idle.

Thats not very good. I was hoping to reduce the amount of wires under my hood.

What would be a good 3 wire alternator with a built in voltage regulator? I really want to get the vr off the fire wall.

We have to remember that GM alternators had regulators built in, Mopars used external regulators on three wire early style alternators. If you use a japanese Denso alternator on later model cars, regulator is built in alternator.

Which would you say is better?

I use the tuff stuff 1 wire on my 69 RR works great charges at idle and is 100 amp, I have a mech advance dstrib with msd 6al box, was able to get rid of the factory regulator and ballast resistor. It's even black powder coated to help with heat, been one of the best buys I did.

Did it come with a Pigtail ? I really like this idea.

what brand is your distributor? I'm very interested in this since it eliminates the ballast resistor. I've been looking at the HEI style DUI distributors that have everything internal.

I didn't know there was a 1-wire alternator out there that would charge at idle. Any other changes to handle that 100 amp alternator? Did you beef up some under hood wiring and hopefully by-pass or eliminate the ammeter and go with a volt-meter instead?

Distrib. is Procomp Mechanical advance. connected right up to the MSD 6AL plug and play. Battery wire to original ALT was already upgraded to 10 awg. Had to run tach wires to new tach. Old AMP gauge was already disconnected so if yours is not just bypass it or take the wires off and cap them. I use a volt meter now. everything works great.
