1964 heater box question

On the water control valve there’s a small copper wire-tube coiled in the box itself and ran up to the valve but it’s just hanging there. On mine it’s not hooked to anything, what is its purpose, is it needed?
 
It senses and controls heat that is set by position of Heat/Cool lever. Shuts the hot water inlet valve off and on.

I’ll get a picture of this one (control valve) but I think that piece had been replaced by a manual one. I took it apart thinking what you alluded too, only found a steel plug with a threaded brass rod, no movement inside. Maybe the whole thing is an aftermarket replacement. The valve in my 65 looks much different than this on out of the 64. The reason for my original question, learning! Thanks again
