Is there any one who has great knowledge of adjusting the push button cable. I can only get 4 gears. This is a new rebuild and new cable. The pan is off so i can see it move from underneath. I dont think its an adjustment issue. i think i need to do slight modification. ..................

You need a mirror to look at the top of the valve body. Have someone shift it through all the gears to be sure the detent ball sits squarely in the middle of the pocket on the rooster comb in each gear. If not, adjust.

Mopar ended the buttons in '64; but the '65 transmission still was cable. If you get '4 gears' that's what it is 1-3rd and R. Have you done the adjuster wheel trick? Or was this trans set up for the gear shift?

Push button or console shift? What did the trans come out of? What is it going into? The rooster comb on the valve body is different between push button and console shifter. If you get these mixed up, you are in trouble.

In my experience use the rooster comb and manual valve that matches the year of the car when using a 65 year model cable shift transmission.

'65 rooster comb and manual valve are the same as '64 console shift, because the shifter has to go through extra travel to select park with the other cable.

Thanks ! I did not know that.

To be honest we rebuilt this transmission 2 years ago it's a 1965 it's going into a 62 fury I remember there was an issue that we had to do something with the comb when we rebuilt it my problem is push buttons are first second drive neutral in reverse and then I've got the park lever next to it the push buttons I can only get room for four it doesn't seem like I have the ability to either do to first for or to last for it almost seems like the shaft that holds the cable in place is a little long and won't let the cable fully extend to get all five positions

You need the rooster comb and the manual valve from a 62 to make it work properly

'62 had a separate park cable. Did '65 have two cables?

Yes, the '65's have two cables, just like '62-'64. If you change the rooster comb, you need to change the manual valve as well.

I do recall the cable adjustment between 62 and the later cars is different. I believe you need to use the later procedure. I hope this helps.

Having just finished up with this work I have a question to tack on here if I may. I did my adjustment with my oil pan off and was able to watch and see what was going on. Is it safe to summarize the adjustment process as simply centering the neutral finger with the neutral safety switch button??
Is there any shifting improvements to be gained on either side of this point?

If the pan is off you can see what’s happening. Get a mirror. Put it above the rooster comb. There are 5 scallops that the detent ball can fit into on a 62/64 push button rooster comb. Push the buttons. The ball should drop into the scallop in each gear. As stated the manual valve for a 65 is different. The width where the rooster comb arm fits into the valve is narrower. What gears are able to get? Also the neutral switch is different. Let me know what you come up with. I’ve built a ton of these. I race them as well.
