Hello,

I just started working on my dad's 1966 Charger.

I am in the process of replacing the front inner/ outer bearings AND Grease Caps.

The driver side has a 10" drum brake hub (Grease Cap is missing which lead to failure). The passenger side has an 11" drum brake hub (Grease cap in good shape).

1. Can you please verify that the inner/outer bearing part numbers are the same? Looking on RockAuto they appear to be the same.
2. Would you please tell me why the grease cap ON the 11" hub is too small for the 10" hub (the 10" hub in this picture has an ID Inside Diameter that is larger than the 11")?
3. Why is the inside lip of the 10" hub machined out (see blue arrow)? It is not solid like the 11" (thus, the Grease cap won't fit the 10")? Does it require a different Grease Cap?

Because this car did not have a grease cap on the 10" side, the bearings failed. I would like to replace the grease caps but when i look it up it says the grease caps are interchangeable.

I sure would appreciate any insight you can provide.

Regards,
Hank

The 10 inch is junk. Most likely the shot bearings made it loose and the large washer cut the hub open.

I agree.

Why the different hubs? But I think the hubs are the same - are they not?

Thanks for the replies. I looked closely at the 10” hub and it does not appear to be damaged in any way. And i looked at another one online and it looks exactly like the one in the picture i posted.

I think have the answer. I just got this pic off ebay. It appears the 10” hub requires and outer seal. It doesnot utilize a dust cap. The inside lip looks machined out like mine. Can any of you confirm?

I can confirm that I'm not sure what you mean. They all use a dust cap. Here is a 67 10" drum/ hub

Mine definitely doesnt look like yours. Here is a picture of one i found on ebay. The little valley where the blue arrow is what mine looks like. Maybe somebody stuck a none 66 charger hub on the car before my dad gave it to me. Ill just look for a new one. Thanks

That seal, the size of the inner bearing!, is the inner grease/dust seal.

That said, why on earth would you want to run a 10" on one side and an 11" on the other...

This is just the way i got the car. I will just buy a new 11” hub to match the other side. I appreciate your guys input.

B bodies with 10" or 11" drum brakes take the same grease cap. They used the same cap for years. Your hub looks like it is machined for an O ring, or is it just the picture?

Your first picture the blue arrow points to the outer edge of the hub. Yours is all cut out and cut to a knifes edge.

So not a real expert on these brakes, but first, in 66 I believe the B Bodies never had a 11 inch front brake. They would have been a 10 x 2 1/2. Later on the B bodies also came with 10 inch or 11 x 3.

The hubs get really tricky because they never came separate from the factory (hub and drum are one part number) so there are not independent part numbers in the parts book. I would think that the hubs could be different based on shoe width, but I don't understand why they would be different due to drum size. However, I believe the only drum sizes for the front were 11 x 2 3/4 and 11 x 3, and the max width in 10 inch was 2 1/2 so that may be the difference.

If someone knows otherwise, please educate me.

I was always wondering if my 65 C Body 11 x 3 hardware would fit the 11 x 3 B body stuff. I know the knuckles are different. Based on the parts book, there appears to only be one knuckle for 10 and 11 inch for B bodies.

Pnora - you were absolutely correct on your first post all along. I took a better look. And i looked at the washer. The washer wallowed it out. Sorry for all the confusion guys. But you answered my question. Thx!
