1966 Coronet 4 door sedan to 2 door sedan changeover

Yes they roll down but only part way and the back windows have a frame around them. If I remember correctly the hardtop windows pitch either forward or backwards as they roll down and roll down completely unlike the 2 door sedan rear windows.
Moparmarks straightened me out on the hardtop. Been awhile since messing with a HT and you're right about the way the windows roll down. The sedans don't go completely down and iirc, the HT windows start with a backwards motion and then go forward until they are completely down.....? Man, I've had a few sedans but only one hardtop and one ragtop and it's been awhile for those!

Here is the "victim" the pictures kind of suck, and you will note the mice nest remains that shot out when I hit the fan switch, but after not running at all since 1989 or thereabouts it started right up (with a jury rigged gas tank) and everything works. It has a little rust on the bottom of the front fenders but overall pretty solid. My friend the bodyman is down at Moultrie right now looking for the parts. It might happen. Keep the 4 doors and instead spend your money and time on a nasty 440 and 727 combo and go out and hurt some Mustang owners' feelings.

I agree, there is nothing shameful about a fast four door! I like the 4-doors and in fact had I not found my 2 door sedan would have probably just picked up a car just like yours to do what I am doing to mine.

Let me know if there is anything I can do to help. I can pull up any photos I have if need be though the car is wrapped up til spring so no new ones til next year.

HT413 you've got a good point, before I went on this changeover "binge" I thought about doing just what you are saying. If the swap doesn't get off the ground I'm thinking of finding a complete 383/727 or 440/727 and just putting them in. I've got a crossram and some fenderwell headers but that might give it away.

The 4dr I have is pretty solid car but has been sitting since the late 70's and the interior was totally shot even tho it looked great. Even the pedal pads looked good but the vinyl seat covers and head liner was dry as a bone. The vinyl even cracked when I sat in it. The only rust was below the battery tray and the lower left rear quarter. If the interior had been as nice as the rest of the car, I would have fixed it for a daily driver. There were also some parts missing when I got it to so it wasn't just a clean up with some repairs and drive it kind of a deal. The teen looked like someone never changed the oil and even tho the odometer showed 57k miles, things were just wore out. Even the ball joints were loose and the teen had bent pushrods with one punched through a rocker. Looked like someone just didn't maintain it. Anyways, my first car was a 66 Belvedere 4dr which later got a mild 383 dropped in to replace the poly teen. Got to admit, I had fun with that car but 4 door cars just don't appeal to me that much. My nephew was going to take this Coronet and drop a hot low deck into it but he really wants a 70-74 Barracuda so I told him to keep saving for that instead of putting money into the 'Net that he would never get back....and he agreed so, the Net is going to give up some sheet metal and a few other parts for my 66 2dr post Belvedere.

Just a little of the hot rodder in me thinking but why not cut the car completly in half sorta in the rear door area.Take out a foot or so and weld it back together.Fixed rear 1/4 glass, weld the door area, tie the frame.Seems like it would be a lot less work.

I say go the other way, add a few belvederes in the middle to make a limousine. You'd be the only guy around with a 30 foot coronet...

Some of my fondest car memories stem from doing just this sort of thing, but with a C Body. Fun times.

Update 1966 Coronet Four Door

I posted about this car late last year. Finally I had some time so I fixed up most of the little problems, got it running, got it registered, and have been driving it all over the place. Back when these cars came out if you asked me what I would have thought about driving a 4 door sedan my answer wouldn't have been very positive. Back then all any of us wanted to drive were 2 door sedans with a four speed and a big motor. That was then, but now I gotta say with the AM radio blasting and the heater blowing hot this thing is really fun to drive in December up here in Connecticut. I'm over the "turn this into a two door sedan thing" and thinking about some possibilities that might surprise some of the nitwits around here with that foreign stuff. For now I'm going to try to make this reliable enough to take me and three other "old men" to Carlisle next July. The trunk is big enough for everybody's bags, a BIG cooler and any junk I pick up down in the swap meet area. See you there. JimM

I'm glad you decided to keep it a four door, it's actually a pretty nice car the way it is.
I relate to your feelings about driving around in a 4dr. sedan. I once felt the same way, but now I'd actually like to have a car like your Coronet. What a great sleeper it'll make! I think you'll have fun with it.

Many years ago I purchased a retired 1968 Polara 4dr. sedan Ex-Highway Patrol car for the 440 Magnum engine under it's hood. I eventually pulled the 440 and put it in my '68 Dart, dropped a mild 383 in the Polara then resold it. But for a month or so I drove the Polara around and quite a few guys, even my buddies laughed at me until I smoked their cars with the Polara. People hate getting beat by a 4 dr. sedan!
Enjoy your Coronet, I wish it were mine. I love sleepers!
