You need to clean and highlite letters.
A friend was helping with the car yesterday and asked why the fender tag was different from the doorpost tag. I was at a loss and didn't know the reason. Made me question if I had a car with two different sets of tags, stolen or whatever. So it's great to know that about the shipping order #.First eight numbers are the shipping order number. The first three of that is the scheduled production date, June 29,66. The Q is dark red upper door frame paint. 41under AB is 318 poly engine. 5 under the C is automatic trans. The 1 under the R is AM radio, and 1 under S is A.C. It is not everything you wanted, but it is a start.
Good thing I already had this decoded!66/67 Charger site has a 66 tag decoder.
Some are Charger specific, but I believe it's the best available on line.
Thanks R/T, that number does match the number on the rad support. Someone mentioned that number may also be punched under the decklid weatherstrip on the driver's side? The SO number will be stamped into the rad support on the drivers side of the car. My best guess for the 8 under the D is HD brakes ( 11" drums). The 1 under the G could be 26" rad. Which your car would have due to the AC. In your VIN the R stands for Belvedere / Satellite. The P makes it a Satellite. The 23 is two door hardtop. The 7 is the assembly plant, St. Louis MO.
Not positive but in 66 it isn't under trunk weatherstrip. Some say driver side behind the rear bumper. Haven't had my bumper off since 1983.Thanks R/T, that number does match the number on the rad support. R/T just mentioned that too..Thanks Fran! Not positive but in 66 it isn't under trunk weatherstrip. Some say driver side behind the rear bumper. Haven't had my bumper off since 1983.
Yeah, so 629 would be June 29. Sounds like yours was done 3 months before mine. So did your car have a Certicard in it when you bought it, or are you the original owner? Looks like both cars were out of the St.Louis plant. In lower left corner of fender tag looks like 629 is it? That usual scheduled build date. Mine is 308, Mar 8th St. Louis plant also. Number on my car ID after plant number 7 is 231820. I'm not expert on these numbers that your car was produced 22.965 cars before mine. Don't know what that 629 if it is that has stumped.
The original 318 is long gone from this one. I've met the past two owners of this car, most recent one had it a year or so, and his buddy had it nearly 10 years. He made it sound like he was at least the 3rd owner of the car. It's got a 440 out of a 74 rv now. If the certicard that came with this car is legit, a gentleman from Trenton, TN was the original owner.Third owner, certacard lost in original owners house. Have all the paper work from the time he ordered (Jan. 66). Scheduled production dates aren't dates but your car was made before mine I'd think by serial number or a miss stamp on fender tag. 629 would be June 29 1965 if it was made before mine. Some date coded parts like engine could shed some light on it if it really matters.

So the #8 is the major league stumper!T/Q = upper door frame painted red to match P4R (red) interior.
D/8 = I'm not confident giving an answer on this one.
G/1 = 26" radiator
a/6= console
b/5 = bucket seats
u/1 = ordered car = someone sat down with an order sheet and checked the boxes to have the car built as they wanted it. = "Hey, someone is waiting on their car. Get on it."
"Ordered" does not equal 'special ordered'. Believe it or not, people actually ordered cars they way they wanted them.
108,855th car off the line at that plant for that build year = commonly reported and believed but totally inaccurate. Cars were not built in sequential VIN order. It is not possible to say a car was built such and such before or after another car based on VINs. That's just not how it worked. VINs are related to administration of an order, they have NOTHING to do with production sequence. Online decoders, generally, suck.
