I am trying to determine if the motor in my car is original or not. It is a 1968 RT built on october 16, 1967. Everyone is telling me that the engine should say D440hp, but mine says C440 and has a maltese cross. What does the cross mean? Could my car have came with a 67 motor in it? Is there any other way that I can tell if this is the original motor or not? Also the transmission? Thanks Alot in advance for any help

Your motor may have been made in 67...Your 68 r/t was built in 67 for the 68 year...The malteese cross you are refering to means that it is the hipo 375 horse 440..I have a 68 440 in my 67 gtx...You may have the correct motor...Since Ma MoPar did not code motors to vin numbers you can say it is correct...I would say yes...You have to check out the cast number on your tranny to find out if it is correct...On inspection of my tranny it was a mix of many different years...

Yes, it should say D440 meaning it was built for the 68 model year.
No.
Doubtful if it has the C desigination for 1967 model year as there would be no VIN stamped on it. If it was a 68 it may have the VIN stamped on the back top of the block near the oil sending unit.
If the transmission is an automatic, it may have the VIN stapmed on the top of the bell housing across from where the engine would be stamped. If it is a four speed, it may be stamped on a pad on the passengers side of the tranny.

The cross means that your particular engine has one crank journal that is .010" undersize from the factory - rod or main I don't remember. It does not mean factory HP. If you have a factory service manual it will explain all the codes on the pad. Factory HP engines were actually stamped HP. Example: My 68 RR 383 is stamped

D383
10 25
HP

As mentioned in the previous post D440 would be correct for your car, indicating the installed year. The block in that case is likely cast in 67 (cast date by motor mount lugs). If you clearly found a C440 then that's a 67 model year engine and the block is likely cast in 66. VIN stamp info as mentioned is correct.

If you have a 67 440 then you could very well have the good heads - casting No. 2780915. These are one year only closed chamber with good ports (same ports as the 2843906 actually).
