Recently acquired a 1968 GTX numbers matching car, has a 440 with 3 speed auto w/ center console, the rear-end is a 3.23 sure grip. The purpose of this post is I am wanting to upgrade some parts because this will be a daily driver, not built for strip. I am going to be preserving all original parts in case I want to make it like factory again. I am going to list some ideas I want to do to the engine and suspension. I am wanting this to be around the 600 HP range (because why not) don't really want to bore out the engine unless necessary (also, pending damage would like to leave the lower end alone). Please let me know your thoughts or you have any recommendations. Car does run and drive

Parts I am thinking about
  1. Edelbrock Performer RPM intake manifold
  2. Trick Flow powerport 240cc heads (do you think 1.55 dual springs is a good choice)
  3. New Push rods to fit TF heads
  4. Carb ??? (I am open to any brand, should i look @ 750 or 850cfm) also, leaning towards vacuum secondaries.
  5. Hughes Engines SEH4246BL-8 BB HYD FLAT TAPPET CAM 242/246-108ºLSA also got a recommendation for SEH3642BL-8 cam as well. Looking to have a mild-mild agreesive cam with some umph but want good quality idle (I am open to any brand)
  6. 1.6 roller rocker arms probably harland sharp
  7. TSP ready to run Distributor (already purchased)
  8. Streetfire spark plug wires
  9. QA1 suspension upgrades (not a priority)
  10. Already has front disc and rear drum brake set up (manual brakes)
  11. TTI exhaust (using original manifolds)
  12. Dynomax Ultra Flo exhausts
  13. If I did get long tube headers, what size and what brand would you recommend where I don't have to get a new starter to fit.
  14. Already have aluminum 4 core radiator installed
  15. American Autowire classic wiring update kit (previous owner rednecked the wiring)
  16. Debating new pistons will see if it is necessary

Welcome to FBBO from SoCal and a fellow 68 GTX owner. Enjoy the build it’s a process.

Welcome from Ohio. IMHO, find another motor, rebuild your #’s engine and set it aside for later. I could be wrong, but wait for some more comments....

Not wrong at all. Absolutely save the numbers-matching original engine!
Tons of 440's out there to build any crazy way you want, but that original engine needs preserved.

Welcome from another '68 GTX owner down here in the NE Tennessee foothills, sts! :welcome::moparsmiley::usflag:

Long time since an update. But got motivated after shop got built. Recently had the paint redone to factory color. Looking good so far.
