1968 Satellite vin. 5th digit E 273 High performance?

Hello out there, does anyone have any information on how many units were equipped with the 273 engine in 1968? I have an Ontario Canada build (Vin. 7th digit code R) Satellite with a 273. Any help is greatly appreciated...
 
back in the day a friend of mine had a 68 satellite we always thought it was a 318 2bbl, till one day I checked the no.'s and it was a 273 2bbl.
 
I don't even show an E, although the book goes for from D to F for '68 and my book shows a D for the 273. Looks like a fair number of them were built but not sure about exports. R = Windsor plant so who knows???

Wow.... I'd check very close to see if that's the original engine. My guess is a)Canada only b)super-duper early in 1968 model year and someone was using up the '67 engines or c)not the original engine
 
Was not even aware the 273 was available in 67. Thought it went to the wayside after 66 when the new 318's went into production.
 
Had a 67 Formula-S, with a 273/auto/3.91's. It was pretty quick.

I'm showing about 11,200 1968 Satellites came with a 273-2 but I agree with others above. For MY 1968, the 273 would show as D in the VIN. Was the E version sold in Canada only ???

Can you share a picture of the VIN or fender tag?

The E in the body stamp indicates the car was built at the LA plant.
The 8 indicates model year 1968.
The R indicates the Belvedere model line.

The 41 on the bottom line of the tag indicates a 318. A 273 codes 31

The VIN should read RP23F8E.

This is a RP Sport Satellite, not an RH Satellite.

The body numbers on a 68 are not the VIN numbers. The VIN is not on a 68 fender tag.
E8R708399 is unrelated to the VIN. That is the shipping order number.

The VIN is only on the dash plate.

If I understand you to be correct...
RP23

E.... does not mean 273
8.... does not mean 1968
R.... does not mean Windsor Ontario Canada
708399 does not mean 703899 = 603898th Vehicle

E = built at Los Angeles plant
8 = 1968 model year
R = Belvedere model line. I.e. RH Satellite, RP Sport Satellite, RM Road Runner, RS GTX.
708399= shipping order number. A number initially assigned to a car, before the VIN is assigned, for billing and administrative purposes, mostly, unrelated to the construction of the car.
