Hi

Im just wondering what is the correct oil pressure sending units for a stock 1969 383 4 spd car. I took a snip of this on the forum and posting it.

The top image is what I had on the car. Dont know if the dash board cluster matters or not. I have non rally dash in roadrunner

I thought he sending unit was the bottom image

What is the difference and what is correct.

The "idiot light" sender on my '69 looks different than the one in the OP, it is shorter with a blue plastic insert instead of black. I believe it was original to the car..

The sending units shown in that picture are aftermarket, and are as listed for an oil indicator light or oil pressure gauge.

The oil gauge sender is a variable resistor that changes resistance between ~9 ohms and ~72 ohms depending on the applied pressure. The oil light sender is a pressure sensitive switch that is closed to activate the light until oil pressure reaches higher that ~8 psi.

Typical original Chrysler units for gauge or light are shown in the following image:

The gauge unit is stamped "INTROL", which was Chrysler's Huntsville Electronics Division. This style was used in the mid-60s through the mid-80s eight cylinder applications. Earlier 60s units and late 80s units are similar but have a post terminal instead of a spade terminal.

Typical aftermarket units for gauge or light are shown in the following image:

The aftermarket unit for the oil indicator light is typically larger than original, but some aftermarket such as Standard Motor Product's "premium" line (PS11) looks similar to original:

In the late 70s, the sending units for the oil indicator changed to a three spade terminal device. One terminal is for the light indicator wire and the other two terminals are for a switch that switches power on and off to the choke electronic control unit when pressure is present or not. The following image shows an original sender/switch of this type and a factory junction block for connecting the light sender/switch in conjunction with gauge sender:

Pardon the mess, it's been in use for 30 years since I rebuilt the engine, and I haven't cleaned it well of late. I added the angle to provide more room around the distributor for the vacuum advance on the regular distributor when I removed the Electronic Spark Advance (ESA). The sender/switch and gauge sender plus the junction block are original 1979 parts.
