There is a discussion on Moparts about the color(s) that Air Grabber inlet screens were when they left the factory. Red (or Orange-Red) was certainly one of the colors, but it seems very probable (IMO) that cars in the first few months of production had the screens painted black...

Here is the link to the thread:

If you have back-in-the-day pictures and info on the SPD (Scheduled Production Day), Assembly Plant, and whether the car came with hood stripes (V21 option)... please post the information.

Here are two St Louis Assembly Plant cars that I have data for:

1969 Hemi Road Runner SPD A15 (October 15, 1968) with V21 hood stripes - black screens
1969 Hemi Road Runner SPD 121 (January 21, 1969) without hood stripes - red screens

Anyone research this puzzle before?...

Allen

Interesting question Allen. "Agent J" looks to have red ones ones, and it's a Lynch Road car. It had hood stripes, and is a red car.

No but I'm right in the middle of this one LOL

Some pictures of St Louis built A4 colored RR with stripes, SPD "A15" taken in the mid to late 70s...

All non-functional Air Grabbers hoods had Black screens that I have seen and all functional Air Grabber cars I have seen had the Orangish-Red ones.

The A4 Hemi RR that I have owned since 1976 had an Airgrabber. The faded factory painted screens were black... without a trace of red in 1976.

I wouldn't doubt it,.......Chrysler built cars they said they never built,.... and did all kinds of crazy **** with mixing and matching options and colors that they said they never done.

I have seen red or red-orange colored screens on the air grabber cars only. The non air grabber cars did not have screens but rather a solid pot metal finned filler plate.

I painted my screens on my original R4 / N96 / V21 RR while I had R4 paint in the gun for the engine compartment. 10-24 and out

A way-back-in-the-day picture of Joe Oldham with a 1969 Hemi Road Runner during magazine tests...with black screens

Screen colors

From what I know all N96 cars with V21 hood stripes should have reddish orange screen inserts.

All N96 cars with out hood stripes (V21) would have black screen inserts.

Any non N96 car will have solid black inserts

But then again there are thoise few odballs that came down the assembly line.

Mine are reddish orange too. At first I thought the possibility of black ones might have been car color Related or whether car had performance paint treatment or not. This thread seems to leave it still an open question. Definetly have not seen many black air grabber screens myself.
