I have a 1970 383 shortblock and am trying to identify if its an hp or not,
it doesn't have an hp or hp2 stamp by the boss next to the distributor,
I read that hp and hp2 are not always stamped onto the block-is this true?
I need confirmation on exactly what I have-I was told that the engine came out of a 1970 roadrunner when I purchased it,
did all roadrunners come with a 383 hp?
Is there a difference between a 383 hp and a 383 magnum?
How do I tell if my crankshaft is forged?
Appears to be painted orange originally but not sure

engine casting #2899830 10
boss by distributor #F383
9 26

IIRC, the blocks were the same specs, just the HP had 9.5:1 pistons and different cam in 1970.

I believe the HP stamp told the line workers to install those parts.

Did a/c ars get HP stamped blocks?

throw a 440 crank in it and Make it a 431

Thanks for the replies!
If mine does not have the hp stamp,
Is it certain that is isn't the high performance 383 or is there any other way to tell for sure?
Thanks

I have a 383 H.P. and it did come with a A/C in my 1970 Roadrunner, it's even on my build sheet if this helps you.

I read that hp and hp2 are not always stamped onto the block-is this true? never seen any research or documentation to prove that. HP blocks did have different components so to match all the components, you'd have to know if it was designated an HP block or not. Do exceptions exist? Probably but that does not negate the general procedure.

I need confirmation on exactly what I have-I was told that the engine came out of a 1970 roadrunner when I purchased it, Very possible that it came from a RR but that doesn't prove it was the original engine. Check the VIN on the passenger's side. That should tell you the assembly plant. If it didn't come from a plant that built RR's, then it's not an HP engine.

did all roadrunners come with a 383 hp? Applications of the 335 horse 383HP varied by year and application. 68 and 69 RR's with A/C did not get the HP engine. In 70, they did.

Is there a difference between a 383 hp and a 383 magnum? "HP" is generic term used to distinguish a variant in the engine. What it actually meant changed from year to year. The most common use and questions come in the 68-70 B body applications when there was a significant variance in the components of a 335 horse "HP" engine and the 330 horse engine. The term Magnum was used by Dodge as a trademark name to indicate the higher performance engine variant. Plymouth used Commando/Super Commando/Road Runner names as their corporate name plate variant.

See above

All 70 Road Runner 383 engines should have had the HP stamping unless it was missed. Your engine has the R stamped which is for regular fuel or 2bbl so it probably was not a Road Runner engine originally
