You can easily remove the glove box if you remove heater box. You don’t need to completely remove glove box for the pad. Just remove all box screws. The box will move and distort enough to get your hand in there. If you want better visualization of where the nuts are. Simply put your phone in there on video record. More items in or under dash you remove. Less fight you will have. We always try to avoid these things. Thinking it’s more work involved. Take the time to make things easier. The best thing you can do regarding any dash work is removing the front seats. It only takes 15 minutes and makes life a hell of a lot easier reaching up in there.
When I installed a new glove box, I simply took the glove box door off (removed the screws) and then the glove box came out the front.
Mine won’t come out the front either. Too much risk in busting it up. And not enough clearance to spin hoping it can come out long direction.
You don't have to remove the heater box to remove the glove box.
I must have got lucky because I didn't have any problem with it.
Doing similar work. I too, came across things needing fixed or addressed under there and I resolved. Look at this way. Maybe, your heater box needs freshened up with paint or you can use that time to inspect for leaks, etc. Now is a good time do so. If you have a non AC car it’s not a big deal to remove one.
I read benbuilder's post #7...take the front seat out?? Guys, are we talking about the same thing? The glove box on the front right side of the passenger side, right? My paperboard glove box was worn out so I took the glove box door off by removing the screws holding it, then removed the screws holding the old glove box, ripped the old one out, and then carefully inserted a new one. Ah ha, maybe that's the deal! benbuilder is trying to salvage the glove box he has and can't get it out without destroying it. In that case, good luck. He may be better off doing what I did. Either way, I was still able to insert the new one without any big problem, and I'm certainly no genius when it comes to these old cars.
On my ‘68 GTX I removed the kick panel, loosened the dash bolt, took the glovebox door off, took off the a-pillar plastic molding and the other dash related trim. And don’t forget the top windshield molding & passenger window upper headliner trim (you don’t want to break the a-pillar cover. The dash needs to flex up quite a bit to remove the glove box from the rear and to reinstall it. It’s a challenge to get it back in but with the dash clearance it went in undamaged.
