1970 GTX Front Suspension Restoration

I'd like to restore my suspension to stock and need a guide.

Just did the front end on my 69 RR the lower control arms were stamped steel with a cosmoline coating.

Below is an excerpt from the ICCA Resto and Judging guidelines. May help you with which way you want to go with the LCA's. Doesn't say what was more common between different models though.

ICCA - Suspension Review B Body - Section # 8
4. Lower Control Arms
The majority of the lower control arms are typically finished with a brown rust preventative
"Cosmoline" (MS-1620) coating. However, a few were finished in semi-gloss black finish.
Both finishes are applied to the entire area except for the eye where the ball joint attaches,
which is natural.
Typically the rivets that hold the ball joint eye have paint marks applied to the rear of the arm,
or the side of the rivet that is flattened. Yellow, white or dark green are typical colors found here

Thank you to 1948Santa. Any idea as to where I can buy the cosmoline coating? Also, the spindles appear to be brownish in color, is that correct? If so, where can I buy that paint?

You can buy Cosmoline in a spray can from Resto Rick or Dayclona and others to.
Don't know if that Brown on the spindles is to simulate rust but that looks far from correct.
Spindles were bare metal so you can treat them with ESC's RPM or spray them with Stainless Steel paint to simulate bare metal.

Spindles were painted to make them look like rust a patina.

I get that, but when I'm spending hours on cleaning and painting/coating I like to make it look newer than older. No harm no foul.

Off the assembly line generally bare steel.

Yes but like I said either treat them with a satin clear, or ESC's RPM product or paint them a bare metel coating of your choice for longevity.

**** NOTE this suggestions are for hi end driver cars. I never put together an OE competed car.

I think with these questions one of the best places for answers of late is right in Member Resq302's thread "Bringing it back to factory specs".

He even stated: "Originals were dipped in Cosmoline"
BUT: They have a great "replacement-paint"

On my 70 Superbee, I powdercoated them incorrectly "Blegian Silver"
This was in 2001, I just did not know.

Does anyone know what color Graveyard Carz uses?
Perhaps I'll call or write to them....

Look at one of my above pictures that show my old In-Violet GTX.
Previous owner did the lowers in a silver paint so with a bunch of masking and tin foil I covered anything I didn't want affected and sprayed the Cosmoline from a can I bought from Dayclona years ago. Resto-Rick also sells it. Would that fix your lower problem?
