I have a question. I'm ready to mate the newly rebuilt 383 engine and new rebuilt 727 automatic transmission together.
DO I USE A SPACER PLATE BETWEEN THE ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION???

for what reason ?? tranny/bellhousing/motor.

A flex plate is used, if that is what you are asking.

I thought there is a metal plate that went around the perimeter of the engine and transmission also has a hole for where the starter go through. Looks like this photo

That plate (RM-6014) is for small block applications. And most places that handle it, like Holley, Amazon or Summit say it is a steel plate, except Summit describes it as both steel and aluminum in the same ad. The big block part is RM-8007. Most descriptions imply that it is there to protect the block in case your flex plate or converter have a catastrophic failure.

However, I've never seen one on any of my big blocks, or in the shop manual. Personally, I don't need one, so you might not either. :)

The plate in the photo in Post #4 looks just like the protection plate on my scattershield.
