In oct 2011 I bought a 1970 RR Post 383 (now a 440-6). Bench seat FE5 Rallye Red (painted EV2 Tor Red) Original N96 car. I have been slowly stripping panels in hopes of painting and taking in the the 2014 mopar spring fling. Sadly was got to the quarter and it was a hidden nightmare. The previous shop had welded(poorly i might add) a new trunk floor over the old one and butchered some of the connecting panels in the process. New AMD full quarters, outer wheel houses, trunk extensions, trunk pan tail panel tail crossmember and gutter rails are on the way. I will post more pictures when i get the rest but you guys get the idea so far. I will also be converting to a 5 speed either the SS700 or a Mcleod unit (if they ever come out) this year. just wanted to get the thread started for all to see

Brad

Well the good news is you have 1/2 of a solid car. The rear frame rails and spring mounts must ok to? That would be a nice surprise. It's amazing what shody work some people do and think it is acceptable. Good luck and have fun with the resto. It will look great when done. Keep posting pics. of the progress.

Thanks for sharing. btw the before pic looks pretty nice. what made you want to tear into the car and redo it?

Nice car. Glad to see you got it so it can be done right.

decided to redo it because the paint wasn't very good even at 20 feet. When we were stripping it it appeared that the paint had not catalyized correctly. plus i just like knowing it was done right. frame rails and spring mounts are 80% likely to be reused. going to the blasters today hopefully all will be well.

Nice car!

I was told that there were only about 187 (? don't hold me to the exact number) 1970 Road Runners with a 383 and an air grabber. In almost all cases, people either sprung for the optional engine and got the air grabber, or bought a budget car without the N96. If you have a fender tag with that combination it is a pretty rare car!

love the 70 rr, have had 69's but someday maybe a 70

interesting hsorman where could i research this more? I will take a picture of the Fender Tag for all to see.

Brad looks like a real cool project!! My wife's favorite car and although not what you could call a real car gal, She will be interested in all your updates as much as i will be. Good luck, Hope it turns out as good and better as your figuring!

Fender Tag shot the line with 519 i believe is the build date code which puts mine built May 19th can anyone confirm? I know the lynch road tag are slighty different.

ah yes..the new trunk pan over the old one bit. had a "friend" do that to my Charger he was redoing for me. not friends anymore. good luck with your '70.

after researching some I know even more about the car. The numbers and the 2nd line are drive train codes. 088 is the standard 383-4 automatic even tells you it was painted orange. 054 is a 3.23 open differential and 668 is a HD 727 3 speed. So this really was a bare bones only 2 options car.

E63 = 335 HP 383
D32 = 727 Auto
RM21 = Road Runner 2 door sedan/coupe
N0A = 383, 1970, Built Lynch Road
229... = sequence number

FE5 = Rallye Red
M2X9 = Medium Trim, Vinyl Bench, Black
TX9 = Upper Door Frame, Black
519 = Scheduled Production Date, Monday, May 19
145... = Vehicle order number
FE5 = Roof Paint, Rallye Red (i.e. no vinyl roof)
V21 = Hood Performance Treatment
N96 = Air Grabber

As far as the rarity of the N96 in a 383: I have no documentation on this I can share as I heard this from a guy I knew. Now I know talk is cheap but this guy is very knowledgeable, and he has a 383 with an added air grabber (as most seem to be), so he had looked this up. Where he found out this information I can't tell you.

From Galen Govier's Production Option Code Book, page 29: "Very few options will be found on a Lynch Road tag, even if heavily optioned!" and "...the 1970 Lynch Road Fender tag was better arranged, but still kept the 3 digit codes on the fifth row! Left to right they are: ENGINE, AXLE, & TRANSMISSION Assembly/Build codes."

keep the pictures coming! What are you build plans, body color, interior, drivetrain 440-6 it sounds w/ the 5 speed (i'm considering also) but what else? , suspension, braking, adding options, any mods/nods to creature comforts, etc.

I have an FE5 RR I'm planning on tearing into also if i don't chicken out :)

Planning on a variation of FE5 red. K member was done by firm feel plan on stock style suspension with firm feel parts. 5 speed for either kiesler or McLeod. Bench seat is staying. Sub frame connectors four wheel disc brakes from wilwood. Just got the car blasted will be posting pictures soon.

wicked!! The car I wish mine was.... cant wait to see it done

back from the blasters
