first I should give a bit of history on why I’m asking thee questions; I’m a Mopar guy who has restored a 66 Coronet 500, 69 d100, 70 d100, and a 68 charger (which I never should have sold!).
I’m looking at getting into another Mopar muscle car and I’ve found an intriguing 71 road runner locally. The car is in really decent shape and is a factory 383, 4 speed manual pistol grip all black car.
I’ve decoded the fender tag to figure out what’s right and wrong with the car compared to factory, and the only major thing changed is that it was originally a factory bench seat car, and now has buckets.
I am hoping some of you gurus out there can educate me, hopefully with pictures, about these cars!

Most of my questions are regarding the A87 road runner decor package, which this car had. I am unsure about a few of the items and if I wind up with the car I would want to make it right.

1) custom style vinyl trim- I have no idea where this would be or what it should look like

2) rear bumper tape treatment- I see what it should look like online, but what about on a factory black car; would it have had white decals on the lower valence below the rear bumper?

3) hood scoop sport stripes- I’m assuming these would have been the line stripes in white in the lowered part of the hood Stamps SS facing sideways?

4) Deluxe steering wheel- I couldn’t find what this should look like online for a 71

5) wheel lip mouldings- self explanatory and missing on this car.

The car has been repainted and some of these details were obviously not put back on.

Also, this car has a rear spoiler; we’re rear spoilers coded in the fender tag? No mention of one when I decided it.

And finally, the strobe stripe; the car has one although it’s silver and I read they were only available in black who’re or gold. Is the strobe stripe something that should show up in the fender tag too?

Any help in clarifying these items for me from the RR decor package would be greatly appreciated!

I’m assuming you are waiting to find out more before purchasing? Otherwise I’d look for the build sheet, they usually stash them in seat springs or behind the plastics of the buckets. That’s will tell us much more. And as always pics help greatly

Thanks for the reply Tim; I’m looking at a bunch of b body and e bodies right now; I will post up some pics of the car when I get a chance, but I was more generally wanting to educate myself on these options as I look at cars, such as where the extra vinyl trim is, the decals on the rear lower valence below the bumper on a black car, and what a premium steering wheel should look like.

Another question I have is correct rims; the car has 80’s style aftermarket tims; I would definitely go back to period correct but 15” rims and tires.
I am assuming the 2 rims in 1971 were steel rims with dog dish, and Rallye style? I’m a big Rallye rim guy!

My parents purchased a new special order Road Runner in 1971 which I drove to high school for two years. Some of the equipment you mentioned got overridden by other options. For example, we ordered the "tuff" padded steering wheel, so we never found out what the "deluxe" steering wheel would have looked like.

the information you want to know would be located on the cars build sheet
some of the information would be on the fender tag

rear bumper tape treatment = black only

hood scoop sport stripes- I’m assuming these would have been the line stripes in white in the lowered part of the hood Stamps SS facing sideways?
your assumption is correct.

we’re rear spoilers coded in the fender tag? yes the code is j68

a87 wheel looks like this

Excellent; thanks fly paper

Ok here goes:

1. This indicates the upgraded upper door panels. If you have a black interior these are the ones with gray inserts

2. Always flat / satin black

3. These stripes were also only originally available in flat / satin black

4. This is the 3 spoke wheel with horn buttons at the end of each spoke

5. Yup

Rear spoiler would be coded on the tag if original to the car

Strobe stripe would also be coded on the tag if original to the car

I am assuming the 2 rims in 1971 were steel rims with dog dish, and Rallye style? I’m a big Rallye rim guy!

Depending on the engine, there were many wheel options:
14” rallyes
15” rallyes
14” road wheels
14” steel wheels with dog dish
15” steel wheels with dog dish
14” steel wheels with full hub cap
Just going from memory and probably forgetting a few

St Louis built cars did not put wheel codes on the fender tag. The only way to determine what is correct for this car is the build sheet.
