1972 Satellite Speedo Replacement

Hi folks. I'm looking for a new aftermarket speedometer cluster with round Rallye style gages to replace the factory sweeping style gage. I've seen one but just wondering if anyone has replaced theirs and if you have any recommendations or info on how difficult/easy they are to install.

This is the one I'm eyeing up but the more I look at it, the more I dislike lt.

You will need to extend the headlight and wiper wires if you are replacing a sweep style cluster.
The connectors are the same, however.

Also, you will need to break out the round, multi-pin connector as the rallye cluster uses individual wires and connectors.

I believe he is talking about going from a factory standard cluster to an aftermarket “Rallye Style with round gauges” cluster. I’ve done it for another, not my taste. Fairly easy to do with either factory dash harness, similar to what YY1 describes for the factory standard to factory Rallye cluster. The aftermarket cluster bezel and switch mounting is pretty flimsy, needs some added support and no radio mounting in the bezel.

For the kind of money listed in that link, I’d consider a Dakota Digital RTX for that dash.

So a rallye aftermarket will drop right in to a standard dash. Something tells me that this is not the case, but I could be wrong. I know on my 68 Coronet that wasn’t the case.

I have done standard cluster to rallye cluster swaps. It is simpler to replace the dash harness with a rallye cluster harness. Other wise each wire in the standard cluster round pin conector must be indentified and re terminated to the correct location on the rally cluster. Back lighting, some of the indicator lights are connected much differently, Not fun. You might have re use some of the A/C wiring from the standard cluster harness if the rallye cluster harness you get does not have A/C, dont throw it away till you are done.

Will have to counter that statement a bit, I’ve done that conversion several times, it’s not that hard. Uses the same color coding. Hardest part is sourcing the discrete Rallye bulb sockets and gauge connections, but they can be found. Nice clean original Rallye wire harnesses are becoming hard to find at a reasonable price. New reproductions are spendy.

Agree, the needed parts are really pretty common. The original cut-off pig tails pop-up from time to time as well, have several extras kicking around. Was making the point that performing the conversion is easier than sourcing the needed parts which can be pretty easy as well. Certainly much less work than swapping out an entire dash harness.

I installed that exact bezel in my 72 satellite. I went with the "Carbon Fiber" gauge set. The only complaint I have is the fitment for the HVAC unit. I actually tried to modify the opening for the HVAC unit, it didn't go well I was really pissed and contacted them about it (I have a thread in here detailing my experience). They sent me a new one for $99.00. I didn't attempt to modify the 2nd one. I'll send pics for reference. I had my whole dash out, which made it not too bad overall.

The problem with the Classic Dash bezel is the lack of frame to install the factory parts, like mentioned, switches and HVAC control unit, designed to fit to the frame and not to the bezel.

Next issue, lack of pilot/indicator lights… turnings, brake and high beams. No place for them since aftermarket gauges doesn’t have these into their fascia’s. Need to figure it out if not using the indicator lights gauge option from Autometer or some other manufacturer. Other wise will need to drill the bezel to install individual lights around.

There is also a nice insert strip with these indicator lights on market, but it won’t work for this bezel

Thanks for that. Did you need a wiring kit or additional connectors or anything else to finish the job? Or did the dash and gouges include everything you needed?

Thanks and Sorry for the late reply. I did buy a seperate wiring kit for the gauges. I believe it was associated with and/or recommended as an option for these gauges. I'll go back through my order history on Classic Industries to get a better recollection. BTW, I do appreciate that company and their website making it easier to go back and look at what you bought and when, especially the older you get.
