1979 Dodge Magnum GT trans question

Curious as to what transmission my 1979 Magnum GT has in it? It has a 360 2bbl and 8 1/4 rearend. Not sure if it is A727 or A904. Appreciate any help

Problem is that the car has no wheels on it and is sitting low to the ground. Wish I could climb under it and look.

its more than likely a lock up 904. the fender tag will tell you. my 77 360 charger had the 904 behind it. most small block passenger cars were using these by the mid 70's. pretty sure the A998/A999 were available in 79

anything is possible , what rear axle does it have? I know a 727 will go right in without one modification other than a shorter driveshaft, so its possible someone stuck one in there.

You can see the transmission from the top, passenger side. it will be obvious If the corner bulges out. Usually 727 was only 360/400 HP, or towing package.(non lockup) Then you frequently see the 9 1/4 rear as well..

904 & 8-1/4. No 727 or larger rear was offered in '79.

Do you still have the fender tag? Here is what to look for if you've got it:

D31 - A904 A/Transmission (Standard Duty)

D32 - A998 A/Transmission (Standard Duty)

D33 - A999 A/Transmission (Standard Duty)

D34 - A727 A/Transmission (Standard Duty)

D36 - A727 A/Transmission (Heavy Duty/Non-Lock up)

D38 - A904 A/Transmission (Heavy Duty)

while the above first half of the answer may be true for the 360-2bbl edition...the statement that no 727 or larger axle was available is very incorrect for the Magnums two years of production....

The 1979 Chrysler parts manual shows the 79' magnum available with HD 360, 727 non lockup, and 9 1/4 rear, 3:21 ratio. Very few made though,,

Thanks for the correction. I myself have never seen that option. Also never seen the above parts manual. Also re-reading my reply, I was trying to communicate that if its stock to the car....
And then Failed to suggest looking up the vin number and possible options.

There were some unusual cars out there then, In 1991 I bought my wife a 1980 Full size Plymouth Gran Fury sedan out of Texas as a daily driver(she hated it)
But I took it over because it was cool! it had a HD360 with the 727 non lockup, and 3:21 ratio 9 1/4 axle. The car was a former Texas DPS car, came with factory duals, and no lean burn. It had the electronic Ignition of the 74's. Straight from the State of Texas excess vehicle disposition lot. it handled great, and was a ball of fire to drive. I kinda miss that car.

for sure these combinations do show up in some strange places, I also have a 360 E58 with 727 and first gear lock out and 9 1/4 2.88 ratio sure track that was a special order detectives car that by decoding the build sheet states the options and was paid for at time of order for the state of SC...base model, Chrysler Newport......that combination is presently sitting in a 1952 Plymouth Club Coupe...these police E58s I know were built in special engine cell and the engine are hand stamped, not machine stamped, at time of production...I am not sure if all the E58 were built in this same engine cell..that would be some interesting information if anyone can add to this..

this car was a ruddy brown color...

ha the old fury cop cars..i had one too,same thing,same tranny too.
car was loads of fun.
i still have the dash/speedo,the spotlight and the roof bar light if anyones restoring one.

glad someone corrected that part about the 727s too,cause they had them in those magnums/chargers/cordobas,etc.
always a long tail.
ik where theres a white one inna barn that the owner just cant seem to come off of,its covered in hay now,but still in good shape.

Which of the "A9xx"'s had the lock-up TC? Or did all of them have it by 1979?
