2024 15th Annual FABO NASCAR "Pick 'Em" Game - One More Time!!!

Talladega it was sort of no issues most the race,
3 wide draft-trains for a crapload
a lil' Toyota pile up in the 3rd stage
& last lap idiots,
taken out most the people & the guy who led the most laps too
got taken out, cheap shot

checkers or wrecker, like normal
always the big one there

Legacy Motor Club announced yesterday (04/23/24) that Erik Jones, driver of the #43 Toyota, will miss the upcoming Wurth 400 at Dover Motor Speedway. Corey Heim will drive the #43 as long as Jones is out of the driver seat.
Jones was involved in a nose-first wreck into the outside retaining wall at Talladega and suffered a compression fracture in a lower vertebra. There is no current timetable for Jones return to driving the #43.
NASCAR has granted a medical waiver for the Cup Series playoffs and Erik Jones would be allowed to qualify for the postseason playoffs despite being sidelined should he meet all other requirements.

A few weeks early, here is the format and driver eligibility requirements for the upcoming 2024 NASCAR All-Star Race scheduled for May 19 at North Wilkesboro Speedway. You can start planning your strategy and driver selection.
NASCAR drivers who have won a Cup Series race in either 2023 or 2024, or is a past All-Star Race winner and is currently competing full-time in the Cup Series, or is a past Cup Series champion.
The 18 drivers currently eligible are:
* A.J. Allmendinger
* Christopher Bell
* Ryan Blaney
* Chris Buescher
* Kyle Busch
* William Byron
* Ross Chastain
* Chase Elliott
* Denny Hamlin
* Brad Keselowski
* Kyle Larson
* Joey Logano
* Michael McDowell
* Tyler Reddick
* Ricky Stenhouse Jr.
* Daniel Suarez
* Martin Truex Jr.
* Shane van Gisbergen
Any new winners from the upcoming races at Dover Speedway, Kansas Speedway, and Darlington Speedway will be added to this list.
The top two position holders from the upcoming All-Star Open can join the list as well as the top choice from the All-Star fan vote.
Another new wrinkle this year is each team will be given three segments of tires for use over the weekend, a "prime" tire (yellow 'Good Year Eagle' lettering), an "option" tire (red lettering), and a "wet weather" tire (white lettering), with specifics regarding usage. The "prime" tires are mandatory for qualifying. For practice, heats, and the All-Star Open the teams can choose which tire to start. Also, all the teams should have to start with option tires in the NASCAR All-Star race and all four tires of the car should be of the same type. Lastly, the wet weather tire will only be used on a wet track.
Confused yet?

05/01/24 update:
An announcement today said Shane van Gisbergen will not be competing in the
2024 NASCAR All-Star Race scheduled for May 19 at North Wilkesboro Speedway. Trackhouse Racing would have been required to provide a third car for him in addition to the cars they will already provide for Ross Chastain and Daniel Suarez.

Congratulations to '44070dart' (FABO) for correctly picking #45 Tyler Reddick (and the cheesy 'stache) to be the quickest qualifier at Darlington.
He picked up
-1 bonus point.

I loved all the throwback paint schemes.

Two "amazing" races in a row, but the race this week at Darlington wasn't because of anything exciting. Darlington was "amazing" because neither the race winner, #6 Brad Keselowski, nor the race runner-up, #54 Ty Gibbs, was picked by any of our NASCAR "Pick 'Em" game players. No race winner or runner-up bonus points awarded this week.

'Yunick13' (FABO) had the low net score for the week with 5.0 points

#5 Kyle Larson was the race leader at the end of Stage 1, #54 Ty Gibbs was in 2nd.

The next races on the 2024 schedule are the 2024 All-Star Open and the 2024 All-Star Race at historic North Wilkesboro Speedway. Watch for a special post about these races.

Just like past years, we're going to treat the 2024 NASCAR All-Star Race next Sunday (May 19) just like a normal weekend NASCAR race, but with less bonus point availability due to the simpler format of the 2023 All-Star event.

All picks for the All-Star Open and the All-Star race events must be posted before 5:00PM EDT (2:00PM PDT) Sunday, May 19, before the television coverage of both races starts on Fox Sports 1.

Here's the weekend schedule:
* No game bonus point for qualifying at this event

* Sunday, May 19, 5:30PM EDT (2:30PM PDT) the NASCAR All-Star Open, a 100-lap qualifying race for all drivers not automatically eligible to drive in the All-Star race. There will be a "competition break" on or around lap 50. The top 2 race finishers will transfer to the All-Star race. A fan vote winner will also advance to the All-Star race. No bonus points will be awarded for the All-Star Open.

* The 2023 All-Star Race is scheduled to be a 200-lap race with two "competition breaks", one on or around lap 100, and the other on or around lap 150.

So, how are points going to work? Pick two drivers as always - driver picks can be from both the All-Star Open and the already-qualified drivers for the All-Star Race. You are picking drivers for only the All-Star Race, not the All-Star Open.
All game scoring will be based on All Star Race stage and finish position only.
But you can pick a driver that is driving in the All-Star Open if you think they will be one of the three drivers from either the All-Star Open stage winners, or will be the fan vote winner, and advance to the All Star Race.
Pick any driver not that is driving in the All-Star Open and double any bonus points earned by that driver. You could get -10 points for an event win, -6 points for an event runner-up, -2 points for leading at the the "competition breaks" of the All-Star Race.
Not interested in any driver except for those already locked in, you say? Any of the drivers racing in the All-Star Open could easily win either the All-Star Open or the Fan Vote on Friday night. Pick a non-qualified driver and possibly earn double bonus points.
So, do you feel lucky? Well, do you?

If your driver wins the All Star Race you'll get a -5 bonus, 2nd-place driver pick will get a -3 point bonus. Also, the driver pick leading at the "competition breaks" of the All Star Race will get a -1 point bonus.
As always, finishing positions from the All Star Race for your driver picks will be averaged. But not all current drivers will be starting the 200-lap All-Star race.
Only 20 drivers will start the All-Star race event, including the Fan Vote Winner and the top two finishers from the All-Star Open preliminary race.
If you pick a driver that doesn't make it out of the All-Star Open, you'll get an 20th-place finish for that driver.

No picks at all will be counted as 20 points since only 20 cars will be starting the All-Star Race.

The list of the 17 drivers guaranteed entry to the All-Star Race can be found in post #43 of this thread. They'll be joined by the Fan Vote Winner and the top two finishers of the All-Star Open.

Good luck!

So, are you still thinking that only the 17 drivers currently guaranteed entry into the All-Star Race are your best chance at points?
Here are a few names that have to race their way in via the All-Star Open...
* #3 Austin Dillon
* #4 Josh Berry (2023 All-Star Open race winner)
* #23 Bubba Wallace
* #48 Alex Bowman
* #54 Ty Gibbs (finished 2nd in the 2023 All-Star Open race)

The above names plus an additional 12 weekly drivers will probably all be trying to advance out of the All-Star Open.
Making them one (or both) of your All-Star Race picks could double your bonus points.
How lucky do you feel?

Television coverage of qualifying for the 2024 NASCAR All-Star Open will be on FS1 today starting at 3:30pm EDT (12:30pm PDT).

Congratulations to 'memike' (FBBO) for being the only player to correctly pick #22 Joey Logano to win the 2024 NASCAR All-Star Race. He picked up -5 bonus points.
Congrats also to 'cuda20' (FABO), 'Sublime one' (FABO) and 'Yunick13' (FABO) for correctly picking race runner-up #11 Denny Hamlin. The each picked up
-3 bonus points.

'memike' (FABO) had the low net score for the week with
-7.0 points

There were only two 'competition cautions' in this race, not three as I previously stated.
#22 Joey Logano was the race leader at the end of the first, #17 Chris Buescher was in 2nd.
#22 Joey Logano was the race leader at the end of second, #12 Ryan Blaney was in 2nd.

Your Pole Pick for Charlotte will need to be posted before qualifying starts at 5:50PM EDT (2:50PM PDT) on Saturday, May 25. Any qualifying picks or changes to previously posted qualifying picks for this race posted after 5:50PM EDT (2:50PM PDT) will not be recognized.
Qualifying will immediately follow Cup Series practice as shown on the Charlotte race schedule on nascar.com.

The weather-shortened Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway resulted in a rarity in our NASCAR "Pick 'Em" game: no bonus points awarded for either race winner #20 Christopher Bell or race runner-up #6 Brad Keselowski since nobody picked either of them this week.

'ocdart' (FABO) had the low net score for the week with 1.0 point.

There were only two 'stages' in this race rather than the scheduled three due to the race being called early because of weather and the late hour.
#24 William Byron was the race leader at the end of the first, #54 Ty Gibbs was in 2nd.
#20 Christopher Bell was the race leader at the end of second, #24 William Byron was in 2nd.

FYI, I read this morning that Fox Sports now has the broadcast rights to the NTT IndyCar Series and will broadcast the entire 2025 schedule on the Fox channel. Also mentioned in the article was that this means the number of NASCAR races broadcast on Fox will drop, with more races moved to Fox Sports 1 (FS1).
I wonder what this may mean for NHRA coverage on both Fox and FS1.

Congratulations to both 'LocuMob' (FABO) and 'Sublime one' (FABO) for sharing the best qualifier pick as their 'locked-in' qualifier pick of #5 Kyle Larson's lap of 23.084 was quickest around the 0,875-mile Iowa Speedway oval. They each grabbed -1 bonus point.
